Create Exquisite Vintage French Pressed Flower Tags: A DIY Craft Guide

Welcome, fellow craft enthusiasts and Graphics Fairy friends! I’m Diana from Dreams Factory, and I’m thrilled to share another captivating DIY project with you. Today, we’re diving into the enchanting world of botanical artistry to create these utterly gorgeous French Dried Pressed Flower Tags. Infused with a delightful vintage charm, these handmade treasures require just a handful of supplies and offer endless creative possibilities. You’ll be amazed at how simple this project is and how stunning the final results are. The true joy lies in your freedom to select unique flowers, devise your own color palettes, and arrange adorable floral compositions for each tag.

Embracing Botanical Beauty: Design Your Unique Pressed Flower Tags

The beauty of this craft lies in its versatility. You can opt for the serene simplicity of a single pressed flower you adore, or gather a cluster of identical blooms for a cohesive look. Alternatively, unleash your inner botanist and create intricate arrangements using a variety of pressed flowers, delicate leaves, or even tiny fragments from other cherished plants.

Consider building your composition around a vibrant focal point flower that boasts bold, eye-catching colors, instantly drawing the viewer’s gaze. Or, if your aesthetic leans towards understated elegance, choose a more neutral overall vibe, letting the subtle textures and muted tones of the botanicals speak for themselves. The choice is entirely yours, allowing each tag to reflect your personal style and the mood you wish to evoke.

Introducing Your Free Vintage French Printable Tags

To kickstart this project, I’ve designed a special set of free printable tags that feature a subtle, elegant blue French tint. This delicate hue provides the perfect backdrop, enhancing the natural beauty of any pressed flowers you choose. Each printable includes a base tag with beautifully jagged edges, evoking a truly antique feel, and a top layer adorned with exquisite French ephemera. This top layer boasts charming handwritten elements and artfully worn details, instantly transporting your tags back in time. As an added bonus, I’ve also included several French ephemera cutouts that will lend even more authentic charm and character to these “Frenchified” beauties, making them truly unique pieces of art.

Essential Supplies for Your Dried Pressed Flower Craft

Gathering your materials is the first step towards creating these captivating tags. Here’s a comprehensive list of what you’ll need:

  • Pressed Flowers: The stars of our show! These can be store-bought or lovingly pressed by you (more on this below).
  • Paper: Choose between white cardstock paper for durability or regular printing paper for a softer, more easily distressed finish.
  • Home Printer: A reliable home printer is essential for printing your free tags.
  • Scissors: A sharp pair of scissors for precise cutting.
  • Mini Distress Inks: Mini distress inks are perfect for achieving that aged, vintage look around the edges of your tags.
  • Blending Tool with Foams: For smooth and controlled application of distress inks.
  • Small Brush: Ideal for applying craft glue with precision, especially for delicate flowers.
  • Craft Glue: A good quality, quick-drying craft glue is essential for adhering your botanical elements.
  • Lace or Ribbon: Optional, but adds an exquisite touch of elegance and texture to your tags.
  • Ruler: (Optional) Useful for straight cuts if you prefer a clean edge over tearing.

Mastering the Art of Pressed Flowers: Tips and Techniques

Before we dive into assembling our tags, let’s talk about the heart of this project: pressed flowers! While you can easily find a vast array of pressed flowers online or in craft stores, pressing your own offers a deeply satisfying and personal touch. If you have access to a garden, a local park, or even a nearby forest, these spaces can become an endless wellspring of beautiful flowers, captivating leaves, and other fascinating plant specimens.

Spring and summer are prime seasons for collecting and pressing flowers, when blooms are at their most vibrant. However, don’t limit yourself – every season offers unique botanical treasures. For pressing, you can invest in a dedicated wooden flower press, which provides even pressure for optimal results. Alternatively, you can improvise using heavy books, achieving surprisingly excellent outcomes. I actually created this charming French flower press about three years ago, and I still adore using it! Truth be told, I’ve enlisted a dozen more books in my ongoing flower-pressing adventures. There’s a special joy in perusing their pages and unexpectedly discovering these delicately preserved beauties.

Storing Your Delicate Pressed Flowers

Proper storage is crucial to protect your fragile pressed flowers. I prefer to keep mine in small recycled boxes, layering them gently between pieces of parchment paper or paper towels. This method allows you to store multiple layers of flowers without them sticking together or getting damaged. When you need a specific flower, you can easily lift a layer using the paper underneath, minimizing the risk of breakage. It’s best to avoid overlapping too many pressed flowers on the same layer, as their dried forms are quite fragile and require careful handling.

Below, you can see a glimpse of some of the pressed flowers I lovingly preserve in a vintage metallic box. This collection showcases a delightful mix: sunny yellow roses, aromatic purple lavender, dainty pink mini carnations, individual vibrant red rose petals, and some charming small white blossoms.

I also keep a dedicated selection of pressed leaves, mostly rose leaves, which are incredibly versatile for creating intricate pressed flower and leaf arrangements. I enjoy pressing them in small groups or individually to maximize design flexibility. Among my favorites are the tiny, delicate leaves from a green plant often called maiden’s hair, which add an exquisite touch of elegance and texture to any tag composition.

Full Step-by-Step Tutorial: Crafting Your Vintage Pressed Flower Tags

Now, let’s bring these beautiful elements together. Follow these detailed steps to create your unique French pressed flower tags.

Step 1: Preparing Your Tag Layers – Cut and Tear

Begin by cutting out the top tag layers from your printable. For an authentic vintage aesthetic, I highly recommend tearing the edges rather than cutting them. To achieve this, place the tag on your table and gently tear the edges outwards, working gradually. This creates a beautifully imperfect, aged look. It’s much easier to tear these edges first, before cutting out any other elements, as it gives you more control over the paper.

Step 2: Cutting and Distressing All Paper Elements

Next, use your scissors to precisely cut out all the remaining paper elements: the base tags and the French ephemera cutouts. Once cut, take your chosen distress ink and blending tool. Gently apply the ink around all the edges of these paper pieces. This step is crucial for giving them an aged, timeworn appearance that complements the vintage theme beautifully. Experiment with different shades of brown or sepia distress ink to find your preferred antique effect.

Step 3: Enhancing the Vintage Feel with Further Distressing

To deepen the vintage character of your top tags, you can employ additional distressing techniques. Gently fold and unfold them in various places, create small tears along some edges, or even lightly crumple the paper all around the edges. These actions will break down some of the paper fibers, creating natural creases and an authentic worn look. Once you’ve created these textures, use your distress ink again to highlight the crinkles and torn areas, making them stand out even more. This layering of distress adds incredible depth and realism.

Step 4: Assembling Your Tag Layers with Optional Lace

Now, let’s start layering! Apply a thin, even coat of craft glue to the back of your base tag. You can use a small brush for precision or a plastic bottle with a fine-tip applicator. If you wish to add a touch of romantic elegance, place a piece of folded lace along the top edge of the base tag before adhering the French script tag on top. Carefully align the top tag over the base, pressing gently to secure. You have the option to leave the very edges of the top tag unglued initially, allowing for more distressing in the next step.

Step 5: Final Distressing and Drying

If you left the edges unglued in the previous step, now is the time to perform more distressing. Gently work around these edges, folding and tearing the paper to further break its fibers and create small crinkles. Once satisfied with the texture, apply a tiny bit of glue to secure these distressed edges if you choose. Allow all the glued components to dry completely. After drying, examine your tag. If any white paper edges are still visible or if you desire a deeper vintage look, add more distress ink to blend everything seamlessly.

Embrace the fun in these distressing steps! You’ll be able to create beautifully aged paper that radiates charm and character. The most exciting aspect is that each tag will possess its own unique identity, a true one-of-a-kind creation.

Step 6: Crafting Your Pressed Flower Arrangements

Now for my absolute favorite part: arranging the pressed flowers on your tags! Before reaching for the glue, I highly recommend experimenting with your composition. Place your chosen pressed flowers, leaves, or other small plant elements directly onto the tags without adhering them. Play around with different layouts, focusing on balance, color harmony, and visual appeal. This allows you to visualize and refine your design until you achieve something you truly love.

Once you are completely happy with your arrangement, you can begin the delicate process of gluing. For a lavender tag, for instance, carefully pick a few pressed lavender flowers. Apply a tiny dot of glue to the back of each flower (a small brush works wonders here) and gently press them onto the tag. Repeat this step for as many individual flowers as your design requires, working patiently to maintain their delicate structure.

Don’t be afraid to think outside the box! You can create small, intricate flower compositions by combining various pressed flowers and leaves from your collection. Feeling particularly adventurous? Use individual red rose petals and a few small leaves to ingeniously construct an entirely new type of flower, mimicking the appearance of a different bloom!

I was particularly delighted with how my “new” red rose, which now strikingly resembles a pansy, turned out! As you can see, I had a minor mishap with one of the leaves, but a small piece from another leaf quickly came to the rescue, demonstrating how easily minor imperfections can be artfully corrected.

Step 7: Adding Dimensional French Ephemera Cutouts

To infuse even more charm and a subtle sense of dimension, adhere one of the beautiful French ephemera cutouts from your free printable. For an elevated effect, consider using double-sided foam tape on the back of the cutout. This will slightly raise the ephemera from the tag’s surface, adding visual interest and a professional finish.

Unleash your creativity with these botanical beauties. Whether you choose vibrant, colored pressed flowers or prefer a more subdued, neutral palette for your tags, rest assured they will turn out absolutely gorgeous. The inherent elegance of pressed botanicals, combined with the vintage French aesthetic, guarantees a stunning outcome every time.

While my pressed flowers, though delicate, maintained a slight volume and were easily handled with my fingers, some more fragile dried flowers might require the gentle precision of tweezers. Always assess the delicacy of your chosen botanicals and adjust your tools accordingly to prevent damage.

Can you believe how utterly gorgeous each of these tags turned out? I find that working with pressed flowers truly offers endless opportunities for experimentation, allowing you to create something profoundly unique and personal with every piece.

If you desire to further embellish your tags, feel free! For this particular project, I opted to keep things relatively simple, captivated by their delicate, organic, and inherently charming aesthetic. Sometimes, less truly is more, allowing the natural beauty of the pressed flowers to shine through.

Creative Ways to Use Your Vintage French Pressed Flower Tags

Your finished pressed flower tags are not just beautiful; they are incredibly versatile! Here are a few ideas for how to incorporate them into your life and crafts:

Enhancing Your Junk Journals and Scrapbooks

These tags are perfect companions for your junk journals or scrapbooks. You can strategically match the colors of the flowers on your tags with specific pages or themes in your journal, creating a cohesive and visually appealing color scheme throughout your creative work. They add a wonderful touch of texture and a personal, handcrafted element.

Alternatively, you might prefer to maintain a minimalist approach with your color palette, opting for a more neutral vibe. Gorgeous white pressed flowers, for instance, would look simply amazing and effortlessly elegant nestled within any page, regardless of its existing colors or themes.

The Perfect Companion for Thoughtful Gifts

These exquisite tags would make the absolute perfect accompaniment for beautifully wrapped gifts! Imagine presenting a special birthday gift to Mom or Grandma adorned with such a lovely, personalized tag. Beyond birthdays, their universal charm allows them to perfectly complement any other special occasion, from anniversaries to hostess gifts, adding an unparalleled touch of elegance and heartfelt sentiment.

Charming Home Decor and Mini Signs

Our gorgeous pressed flower tags, with their distinct Frenchified vibe, also serve as the prettiest mini signs for your home! Place them strategically in various areas – on a bookshelf, tucked into a vintage display, or even hung delicately by your drawers. They effortlessly infuse a touch of whimsy and botanical elegance into any space, making your home feel even more inviting and unique.

A Note on Paper Choice and Durability

I forgot to mention an important detail: I typically use regular printing paper for these tags. I find that regular paper distresses much more beautifully and authentically than cardstock, allowing for those lovely crinkles and tears. However, if you prioritize durability, cardstock is definitely an excellent alternative for your tags!

As you may have noticed, I incorporated delicate maiden’s hair leaves into some of the tag compositions. These tiny leaves contribute immensely to the overall beauty and refined delicacy of the final pieces, adding a subtle layer of sophistication.

Regarding the French ephemera cutouts, I initially found them slightly too large after printing. I made a few small adjustments to my design, resizing them slightly to better fit the tag dimensions, which I’ve now integrated into the free printable for your convenience.

Since pressed flowers, by nature, are quite delicate, you might consider spraying a thin coat of a matte acrylic spray on your finished tags to enhance their durability. Before applying, always test the spray on a scrap piece of paper with a pressed flower to see how it affects the appearance.

I had an absolute blast creating and photographing this sweet little DIY pressed flower project for you. I sincerely hope you love it as much as I do and feel inspired to give it a try!
