Crafted from an eclectic mix of reclaimed materials, vintage ephemera, and beautiful digital images, each junk journal tells a unique story. It’s a therapeutic and deeply rewarding hobby that allows crafters to transform forgotten papers and precious embellishments into a tangible piece of art. The beauty of junk journaling lies in its freedom – there are no strict rules, only endless opportunities to create something truly personal and meaningful. Alessandra Bordon’s Dream Junk Journal: A Glimpse into the Ethereal
Hello everyone! I’m Alessandra from Paper Art Alessandra, and I’m so excited to share my latest design team project with you. For this creation, I envisioned a journal that would embody magic, mystery, and an ethereal quality. My goal was for it to evoke the sensation of being suspended in a dream – sometimes beautiful, perhaps even bordering on a captivating nightmare. To achieve this unique aesthetic, I meticulously selected images from a diverse array of kits available on The Graphics Fairy Premium Membership Site, allowing me to blend various themes and styles seamlessly.
The predominant color palette for this journal features rich blue tones, which I then complemented with an abundance of shimmering gold and strategic touches of deep red. This combination, I believe, lends the journal a distinct charm. In fact, I think this particular journal is perhaps the one I’ve created that carries the most pronounced Halloween flair, without explicitly being a Halloween journal. For the cover, I chose an antique copy of Pinocchio. Its original textured surface was already beautiful, a lovely green, but I reimagined it by adding stains in various shades of blue, white, and gold paint. To complete the transformation, I crafted a new spine, giving the journal a fresh yet antique character.
As you delve into the pages, you’ll discover an abundance of interactive elements: numerous pockets to tuck away secrets, playful flips that reveal hidden imagery, dynamic moving images that add a whimsical touch, and many concealed spaces just waiting to be explored. Every detail has been thoughtfully placed to enhance the dreamy, mysterious narrative.
A Page-by-Page Unfolding of Dreams and Whimsy
Page 1: Luna’s Magic & Spooky Legends
Venturing into the first page of this Dream Junk Journal, I aimed to create an immediate sense of wonder and intrigue. Here, you’ll find two cleverly designed flip pockets, each concealing a delightful surprise. The images for these pockets were carefully chosen to set the mystical tone: one features an enchanting image from the “Luna the Magical Queen” kit, while the other incorporates the captivating “3 Moths Card” image. Opening these flips reveals two unique cards. The first card showcases a mesmerizing moon image, also sourced from the “Luna the Magical Queen” collection, radiating an aura of celestial beauty. The second card presents a striking hand image from the “Steampunk Aesthetic” kit. Both cards are backed with evocative “Legends From Fairy Land” images, providing a subtly spooky and wonderfully atmospheric background that perfectly complements the journal’s overarching theme of dreams and beautiful nightmares.
Page 2: Ocean Blues and Sky Garden Wonders
Turning the page, the left side introduces a card that truly resonates with the journal’s mystical essence. I crafted this card using one of my absolute favorite images from the “Ocean Blues” kit – a majestic goddess rising from the sea, an image that evokes power and serenity. This captivating visual is layered over a beautifully distressed turquoise background, enhancing its vintage and ethereal feel. On the right-hand side, the theme shifts to celestial charm with elements from the “Sky Garden” collection. Here, a detailed constellation chart serves as the backdrop, inviting contemplation of the cosmos. Adorning this page is a lovely card featuring a whimsical little girl serenely seated on the moon, a classic image of childhood wonder and dreamlike escapism, perfectly complementing the starry expanse.
Page 3: Endless Skies and Whimsical Movement
The journey through the Dream Junk Journal continues with a spread that combines elegance with playful movement. On the left, a striking card has been created using a gorgeous image of three women, sourced from the “Endless Skies” kit. Their ethereal presence is further enhanced by the background page, which originates from the “Scripted Stars” kit and is printed on delicate vellum paper. This choice of material adds a beautiful transparent quality, creating an almost ghostly or dreamlike layering effect. The right side of this spread introduces an element of interactive charm: a movable card. This card features an image of a sweet little girl from the “Digi People” collection. To transform her into a whimsical puppet-like figure, I added delicate butterfly wings and attached a string, giving her a sense of playful movement that brings the page to life and encourages interaction from the viewer.
Page 4: Family Tree and Hidden Surprises
For this section of the journal, I decided to incorporate a page from the “Family Tree Genealogy” kit, giving it an unexpected and slightly spooky twist, much like the unsettling beauty of a haunting dream. This transformation was achieved by layering and combining various elements from several Graphics Fairy Premium site kits, creating a cohesive yet mysterious narrative. On the right side of the spread, a beautifully crafted corner tuck spot takes center stage. This element was made using an intricate piece from the “Antique Indian Patterns” kit, providing a touch of exotic elegance. The card tucked within features a stunning black and white image from “Sky Garden.” To infuse it with a subtle burst of color and brightness, I delicately added watercolor to the planets, making them pop against the monochrome background. Meanwhile, on the left, set against the serene “Polar Hues” background, I designed a unique pocket featuring an angelic image from the “Angelic Symphony” kit, perfectly sized to hold a charming card from the “Clocks and Faces” collection.

Continuing the journey, this spread is grounded by a serene background from the “Polar Hues” collection, setting a calm yet mystical stage. I then introduced a dramatic “Ephemera Curtain” image, which adds a theatrical touch, as if drawing back the curtain on a hidden world. Nestled within this scene are two captivating cards, each meticulously crafted using images from the “Digi People Photos” and “Digi People 2” kits. To elevate their whimsical charm and align with the journal’s dreamlike quality, I added delicate wings to the figures, transforming them into ethereal beings. A thoughtful detail for interaction is the adhesive dot placed on the back of each card, allowing them to be moved and repositioned by the viewer, adding a dynamic and personalized touch to the page.
Page 6: Ephemera Curtains and Dynamic Characters
This vibrant spread on the right features a “Sky Garden” background, providing a beautiful celestial canvas. Floating gracefully within this scene is a “Steampunk Apothecary” balloon. To enhance the illusion of movement and make the balloon appear as if it’s truly suspended in air, I placed an adhesive dot on its back, allowing it to be subtly shifted. On the left side, a “Celestial Images” background sets a cosmic mood. I crafted a unique pocket using an intriguing owl image from “Vampire Lair,” adding a touch of nocturnal mystery. Tucked within this pocket is a charming bottle card, perfectly selected from the “Steampunk Aesthetic” kit, completing this eclectic and imaginative composition.

Diving deeper into the ethereal narrative, the left side of this spread showcases a striking “Luna” background page, instantly evoking a sense of lunar mystique. Here, I ingeniously transformed “Luna” star charts into a turning card, an interactive element that invites the viewer to discover new astrological alignments with each turn. The right side is anchored by an “Endless Skies” celestial map, serving as a captivating background that draws the eye across a cosmic expanse. Adorning this backdrop is a delicate little apothecary bottle card, which I paired with a “Poe’s Halloween” blank label tuck spot. This combination creates a subtle nod to classic mystery and enchantment, hinting at untold stories and forgotten potions, perfectly aligned with the journal’s dreamlike and slightly haunting theme.

On the left, a “Blue Fairy” cover page serves as a serene foundation, to which I added a delicate butterfly, enhancing its whimsical appeal and connecting it to themes of transformation and nature. The right side features an intriguing flip element, crafted with a truly unique image: two anthropomorphic butterflies gracefully dancing, sourced from the captivating “Masquerade Ball” kit. This image adds a touch of playful fantasy and elegance, inviting the viewer to imagine a hidden ball in a secret garden, perfectly complementing the dreamlike quality of the entire journal.
