DIY Shrinky Dink Charms: Craft Your Own Parisian-Inspired Jewelry

Bonjour, creative spirits! Heather from Thicketworks here, bringing you an enchanting project that will transport you straight to the romantic streets of Paris – our DIY Shrinky Dink Charms, perfect for crafting a stunning Parisian-themed bracelet and more!

Like many of you, I harbor a delightful dream of one day strolling through the charming alleyways of Paris, exploring the sun-drenched landscapes of Provence, and collecting an array of precious, unique souvenirs along the way. While that grand adventure awaits, why not infuse our everyday lives with a touch of French elegance? This project allows us to celebrate our love for all things French by crafting simple, beautiful, and utterly personalized jewelry pieces right from our own homes.

For this delightful crafting journey, I meticulously selected some of my absolute favorite vintage-inspired images from The Graphics Fairy’s extensive collection. These iconic French motifs capture the timeless allure and romantic spirit of Paris, making them ideal for our charm project. You’ll find a blend of elegant typography, classic symbols, and charming illustrations that perfectly embody the Parisian aesthetic.

Each of these images brings a unique element to the collection, from the architectural grandeur of the Eiffel Tower to the delicate artistry of the Fleur de Lis. Choosing the right images is crucial for setting the tone of your charms. Look for designs with clear lines and good contrast, as these tend to shrink beautifully. If you’re ready to create some of these darling, miniature works of art, follow along as we transform flat sheets of plastic into exquisite jewelry!

Free Printables for Your DIY Shrinky Dink Charms

To make your crafting experience as smooth and enjoyable as possible, I’ve taken the liberty of compiling all the beautiful images I used in this project into convenient PDF files. These printables are designed to streamline your process, ensuring you have access to the exact Parisian-themed motifs without the hassle of individual downloads.

Feel free to download these curated image sets by simply clicking on the image below. You’ll find a delightful assortment of vintage French designs, perfect for bringing your Parisian jewelry dreams to life.

A Quick Note on Sizing: These PDF files are primarily sized to print optimally on 8” x 10” Shrinky Dink sheets, which are commonly available. However, don’t worry if you’re using standard 8.5” x 11” shrink plastic; these files will still work wonderfully. You might just need to make a slight adjustment in your printer settings or within Adobe Acrobat (or your preferred PDF viewer) to resize them slightly before printing. Always perform a test print on plain paper first to ensure your chosen images fit perfectly and are to your liking before committing to the shrink plastic.

Essential Supplies for Your DIY Shrinky Dink Charms

Gathering the right tools and materials is the first step to a successful crafting project. For these beautiful DIY Parisian Charms, you’ll need a combination of specialty items and common craft supplies. Here’s a detailed list to ensure you’re fully prepared:

  • Ink Jet Compatible Shrink Plastic Sheets: This is the star of our project! I highly recommend Shrinky Dinks 8″ x 10″ Printable Bright White sheets for vibrant, crisp images. Ensure you select “inkjet compatible” plastic, as this allows your designs to be printed directly onto the surface without smudging. Different types are available (clear, frosted, white matte), each offering a unique final look.
  • An Ink Jet Printer: A standard inkjet printer is all you need to transfer your chosen designs onto the shrink plastic.
  • Scissors: You’ll benefit from having both full-sized craft scissors for general cutting and a pair of small, sharp cuticle scissors or detail scissors. The smaller scissors are invaluable for intricate cuts and delicate curves, ensuring your charms have clean, professional edges.
  • A Hole Punch: Essential for creating the openings from which your charms will dangle. I prefer using a robust hole punch like the Crop-A-Dile, which handles thicker materials like shrink plastic with ease and offers various hole sizes. Remember that holes will also shrink, so punch them slightly larger than your desired final size.
  • A Corner-Rounding Tool: Tools like a Crop-A-Dile Corner Chomper are incredibly helpful. When shrink plastic reduces in size, any sharp corners can become intensely pointy. Rounding them before shrinking creates a much softer, safer, and more aesthetically pleasing finished charm.
  • Krylon Matte Finish Spray: A clear protective spray is crucial for sealing your charms. It not only protects the printed ink from wear and moisture but also provides a beautiful matte finish that enhances the vintage aesthetic of our Parisian designs. Ensure you use it in a well-ventilated area.
  • A Heat Tool or Oven: This is what transforms your flat plastic into miniature charms! A crafting heat tool (like an embossing gun) offers more control over individual pieces, while an oven (toaster oven or conventional) is great for shrinking multiple pieces simultaneously. Always follow the specific instructions on your shrink plastic packaging for optimal results.
  • A Work Surface that can Stand Up to High Heat: Safety first! A ceramic tile, glass cutting board, or an old baking sheet works perfectly to protect your workspace from the heat generated during the shrinking process.
  • Tweezers: A pair of sturdy, wooden-handled tweezers is helpful for maneuvering the charms while they are hot and pliable, especially if they curl excessively during shrinking.
  • An Acrylic Block: This is a simple but effective tool for flattening your charms immediately after they’ve shrunk. The weight and flat surface ensure your charms cool perfectly flat, preventing any residual curling or warping.
  • Assorted Jewelry Findings: This is where your charms become wearable art! Stock up on jump rings, jewelry chain (for bracelets and necklaces), eye-pins (for creating beaded dangle charms), various beads, and clasps.
  • Needle-Nosed Pliers: Essential for opening and closing jump rings, attaching clasps, and manipulating other small jewelry findings.

Optional Items for Added Flair:

  • A Suitable Rubber Stamp: If you wish to add extra texture or design elements, a rubber stamp with a fine detail works wonderfully. I used the Stampers Anonymous “Papillon” stamp by Tim Holtz for some butterfly motifs, which perfectly complement the French theme.
  • Ranger Archival Ink Pad in “Jet Black”: If you’re using rubber stamps, Archival Ink is ideal as it’s permanent, waterproof, and won’t smudge or fade during the shrinking process or when sealed.

Having all your supplies organized before you begin will make the crafting process much more enjoyable and efficient. Now, let’s dive into the fun part of creating your unique Parisian Shrinky Dink charms!

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Craft Your Parisian Shrinky Dink Charms

Now that you have all your materials ready, let’s embark on the exciting process of transforming flat sheets of shrink plastic into exquisite miniature charms. Each step is designed to guide you toward creating beautiful, lasting pieces of jewelry.

Step 1: Print Your Designs onto Shrink Plastic

  1. Carefully load your inkjet compatible shrink plastic sheets into your printer. It’s crucial to ensure you’re printing on the correct side of the plastic – typically the textured or matte side, which is designed to absorb ink. Refer to the specific instructions provided on your shrink plastic package, as each brand can have slightly different recommendations.
  2. For best results, adjust your printer settings to a “high quality” or “photo” setting. This will ensure your images print with crisp details and vibrant colors. Avoid oversaturating the plastic with ink, as this can lead to longer drying times and potential smudging.
  3. Tip: I personally printed six sheets for this entire project to create a substantial collection of charms. You can adjust the quantity based on your specific needs; whether you want a few statement pieces or a horde of tiny treasures, this project is scalable. Don’t feel pressured to make hundreds unless you, like me, revel in the joy of mass production!

Step 2: Allow Prints to Dry Thoroughly

  1. Once your designs are printed, carefully remove the sheets from the printer and lay them flat in a clean, dust-free area.
  2. Allow the ink to dry completely. This usually takes just a few minutes, but depending on your printer’s ink and the humidity, it might take a little longer. Skipping this step can lead to smudged images during cutting, so patience is key!

Step 3: Begin Fussy-Cutting Your Charms

  1. This is where the magic begins to take shape! Settle in for a relaxing fussy-cutting session. Put on some soothing music, dream of Parisian cafes, and meticulously cut out each of your printed designs.
  2. Use your full-sized scissors for general shapes and larger cuts. When you encounter intricate details, switch to your small, sharp cuticle scissors or detail scissors. These allow for precise cuts, ensuring your charms have clean, professional edges. Don’t be afraid to cut just slightly outside the black outline of the image if you prefer a tiny white border, or cut precisely on the line for a borderless look.

Step 4: Punch Holes for Hanging

  1. Before shrinking, it is absolutely crucial to punch holes in your charms if you intend for them to hang from jump rings or eye-pins. If you forget this step, you won’t be able to add them later, as the plastic will be too hard and small.
  2. Remember that the holes will shrink along with the plastic, so punch them a bit larger than their desired final size. Place the holes strategically, ensuring they are not too close to the edge of the design, which could cause them to break.

Step 5: Round All Corners for a Smoother Finish

  1. Use your corner-rounding tool to soften all the sharp corners of your cut-out charms. This might seem like a small detail, but it makes a significant difference. As shrink plastic reduces in size, any sharp angles become intensely pointy and can even be a bit brittle. Rounding them before shrinking results in a much smoother, more durable, and aesthetically pleasing charm.
  2. For extra special, more elaborate charms, don’t hesitate to use those cuticle scissors to create intricate contours and details. This adds a unique, handcrafted touch that sets your charms apart.

Step 6: Utilize Leftover Scraps for Stamped Charms (Optional)

  1. Don’t let your leftover shrink plastic scraps go to waste! This is a fantastic opportunity to create additional, unique charms. Cut the scraps into regular shapes like squares or rectangles.
  2. If you’re using optional rubber stamps, now is the time to stamp them with your favorite designs. Press firmly and evenly to ensure a clear impression.

Step 7: Prepare Stamped Scraps for Shrinking

  1. Once the ink from your stamps has completely dried, cut these stamped scraps into your desired square or rectangular charm shapes.
  2. Just like with your printed charms, remember to hole-punch them and round all the corners. This consistency ensures all your charms, whether printed or stamped, have a cohesive and polished look.

After all that meticulous cutting, you’ll have a wonderfully chaotic collection of un-shrunk charms, a testament to your creative efforts!

The Shrinking Process: Witnessing the Magic!

Now, prepare to witness the truly fascinating transformation of your designs! This is often the most exciting part of working with shrink plastic. You can choose between using a heat tool for individual control or an oven for batch shrinking. I personally love the control a heat tool offers, allowing me to carefully monitor each charm’s journey.

Before you begin, ensure you have your chosen heat source ready, along with a pair of sturdy wooden-handled tweezers and your acrylic block close at hand. The tweezers are invaluable for nudging stubborn charms, and the acrylic block is essential for flattening them immediately after shrinking.

Step 8: Shrink Your Charms

  1. Place a single charm on your heat-resistant work surface. Turn on your heat tool (or preheat your oven according to package directions).
  2. Begin to train the heat tool evenly over the charm. You’ll observe it begin to wiggle, curl, and contort itself into various shapes. Don’t panic! This is a normal and expected part of the shrinking process. The plastic is reorienting its molecules as it heats up.
  3. Continue applying heat. The charm will curl up quite dramatically, often into a tight ball, and then, almost magically, it will start to flatten itself out again as it shrinks down to its final, miniature size.

This process is undeniably fun and exciting, though I confess, I always feel a slight apprehension that the item won’t flatten out perfectly! Be prepared for a few mishaps; there’s almost always one stubborn charm that folds over on itself and sticks, no matter how careful you are. If this happens, try gently prying it open with your tweezers while it’s still hot and pliable, then quickly flatten it. It’s all part of the handmade charm!

Step 9: Flatten Your Charms Completely

  1. Once the charm has shrunk to its smallest size and appears reasonably flat, immediately turn off your heat tool (or remove it from the oven).
  2. Without delay, quickly place your acrylic block directly over the hot charm and press down firmly and evenly. This step is crucial for ensuring your charm cools completely flat, preventing any slight residual curling or warping.
  3. The charm will cool very quickly – usually in just a few seconds. Once cool, it will retain its new miniature, rigid form.

No matter how many times I create these, I consistently delight in the ‘miniaturization’ process. Seeing a large design shrink down to a perfect, tiny replica is truly satisfying.

Step 10: Build Your Collection of Charms

  1. Continue shrinking your charms, one by one (or in batches if using an oven), until you have a wonderful collection that brings a smile to your face! The more you make, the more options you’ll have for assembling your jewelry.

Step 11: Protect Your Finished Charms

  1. To ensure the longevity and durability of your beautiful charms, I highly recommend protecting them with a coat of Krylon Matte Finish spray at this stage. This clear sealant will safeguard the printed ink from moisture, scratches, and UV fading, preserving your vibrant designs for years to come.
  2. To apply, simply arrange your cooled charms on a piece of cardboard or newspaper. Head outdoors or to a well-ventilated area to safely spray them. Apply a few thin, even coats, allowing each coat to dry to the touch before applying the next.
  3. Allow the finish to dry thoroughly, ideally for several hours or overnight, before proceeding to assembly.
  4. Note on Waterproofing: In my experience, these charms came out completely waterproof after being coated with Krylon. However, the exact level of waterproofing might vary depending on the type of ink your printer uses. Always test a small piece if waterproofing is a critical concern for your project.

Assembling Your Parisian-Inspired Jewelry

With your gorgeous, protected Shrinky Dink charms now complete, it’s time for the truly creative part: assembling them into stunning jewelry pieces! This is where your personal style shines through. Gather your assorted jewelry findings and let your imagination take flight.

Step 12: Gather Your Jewelry Findings

  1. Lay out all your jewelry findings – jump rings of various sizes, chains, eye-pins, beads, and clasps. Having everything organized will make the assembly process smooth and enjoyable.

Step 13: Combine Charms into Unique Designs

  1. Using your needle-nosed pliers, begin to open jump rings and attach your charms to chains, other charms, or eye-pins with beads. There’s no single right way to do this; experiment and combine the charms in whatever manner pleases you most.
  2. Consider creating a themed charm bracelet with a variety of Parisian motifs, or design elegant dangle earrings. For necklaces, a single large charm makes a beautiful focal point, or you can create a cluster of smaller charms for a statement piece.

Before you know it, you’ll have a collection of one-of-a-kind Parisian Charm jewelry pieces that truly reflect your personal style and love for crafting! These make exceptional gifts, unique keepsakes, or simply beautiful additions to your own accessory collection.

Inspiration for Your Parisian Jewelry:

Simple Pendant Example:

A classic and elegant choice, a single charm suspended from a delicate chain creates a sophisticated necklace that draws attention to its intricate details.

Charm Bracelet and Earrings Set:

For a coordinated look, combine multiple charms on a bracelet and create matching earrings. This offers a delightful way to showcase a variety of your favorite Parisian motifs.

Alternate Pendant Design:

Experiment with different charm shapes and sizes to create diverse pendant styles. A more elaborate or larger charm can serve as a striking centerpiece for a necklace.

Tips for Shrinky Dink Success

To ensure your Shrinky Dink crafting experience is always a joy, keep these helpful tips in mind:

  • Test First: Always do a small test piece if you’re experimenting with new shrink plastic, printer settings, or techniques. This helps you understand how your specific materials will behave.
  • Ventilation is Key: When using a heat tool or oven, ensure you are in a well-ventilated area. Some fumes can be emitted during the heating process.
  • Patience is a Virtue: Don’t rush the drying or shrinking process. Allowing ink to dry completely and letting the plastic shrink naturally will yield the best results.
  • Image Selection Matters: Images with good contrast and clear lines tend to work best. Very light or subtle images might lose definition when shrunk. Remember, colors intensify as they shrink, so what looks pale on the large sheet will be bolder in miniature.
  • Punch Large, Cut Small: Always punch holes larger than you think you need, as they will shrink. For intricate cuts, use sharp, small scissors.

And there you have it: a truly wonderful way to utilize your favorite Graphics Fairy images and infuse your world with DIY elegance!
