Sharon Coughlin’s Creative Vision: An Assemblage Journal Adventure

Hello again, everyone! Sharon here, and I’m absolutely delighted to share my second design team journal with you today. From the moment I first encountered the exquisite Tattered Paper Treasures kit and its collection of gorgeous collage printables, a clear vision began to form. I knew immediately that I wanted to create an “assemblage journal.” This unique approach involves strategically layering and combining various papers to construct dynamic elements like flips, tucks, and pockets. The goal is to craft an immersive experience, an adventure where each new hidden space invites discovery, perfect for stashing notes, cherished tags, and delightful bits of everyday life.

My passion for the outdoors deeply influenced this project. I seize every opportunity to connect with nature, and I wanted this journal to reflect that love. Integrating delicate butterflies, graceful birds, and lush botanicals felt instinctively right. This way, even on those days when the weather keeps me indoors, I can simply open my journal and be transported to a serene garden sanctuary, flipping through pages that evoke the joy and beauty of the natural world.

The captivating cover of Sharon’s Birds and Botanicals Junk Journal, featuring vintage bird imagery and intricate fabric details.

For the journal’s foundational cover, I repurposed old book boards, lending an authentic, time-worn feel. After meticulously assembling the spine, I felt it needed an extra touch of character. To achieve this, I thoughtfully added torn fabric, carefully chosen to complement the aged and tattered papers used throughout the journal’s interior. The focal point of the cover is a charming cover plate, ingeniously crafted from an Altoids tin lid, sourced from the Secret Flowers kit, and further embellished with more torn fabric. A delightful surprise awaits on the right side: a cleverly concealed hidden pocket, perfect for revealing a secret note card to its fortunate discoverer!

Discovering Hidden Wonders: The Interactive Accordion Flip Cover

An inviting spread within the junk journal, showcasing an interactive pocket and a beautifully crafted tag.

One of the most engaging features of this journal is its innovative accordion flip cover, designed to open both to the right and to the left, offering multiple layers of discovery. When you open the cover to the right, you’ll immediately find a neat little tuck spot, ideally sized for holding a vintage postcard or a cherished photograph. The true artistry unfolds on the journal’s main cover, where I’ve crafted a hand-collaged, two-layered tag. This exquisite tag nestles perfectly into a sturdy belly band, which I secured with large, rustic brads, adding a touch of industrial chic to the vintage aesthetic. This thoughtful design ensures both beauty and functionality, inviting immediate interaction.

Flipping the cover open to the left reveals yet another thoughtfully designed section. Here, a vertical pocket provides the perfect home for a notecard, ready to hold fleeting thoughts or heartfelt messages. Adjacent to this, another delightful tuck spot awaits. Within this space, I’ve placed a charming illustration, carefully selected from the Central Park Bird Watchers kit. This subtle inclusion reinforces the journal’s overarching theme, adding another layer of natural beauty and vintage appeal to this enchanting creation. Each element is placed with intention, creating a harmonious blend of aesthetics and practicality.

Inside the Covers: Layers of Imagery and Personal Touches

An exquisite inside cover assemblage, revealing a narrow pocket with a tall, elegant floral tag.

The inside covers of the journal are where the true “assemblage” artistry shines. I’ve built up multiple layers, each contributing to a rich visual narrative. The top layer features a beautifully crafted long, narrow pocket. This pocket is home to a custom-made tag, which I created by harmoniously blending images sourced from both the Butterfly Garden kit and the Antique Title Pages kit. The juxtaposition of delicate butterflies and historical typography creates a unique and captivating aesthetic, inviting closer inspection and appreciation of the fine details.

A charming spread featuring two window pockets, offering a peek at lovely butterfly cards.

Moving to the next layer of the inside cover, you’ll discover two enchanting window pockets. These pockets were meticulously fashioned using a delicate die cut, framing the treasures within. The tags nestled inside were crafted from the Feathered Friends printable kit, designed specifically to peek enticingly through the window openings. I particularly adore how the striking black and white elements within these tags provide a beautiful contrast, artfully breaking up the warmer color palette of the Tattered Treasure papers. This dynamic interplay of color and design adds visual interest and depth to the overall composition.

The final touch on the assemblage: a vintage library card, beautifully enhanced with scrap fabric.

The final, exquisite layer of this intricate assemblage integrates a vintage library card printable, a delightful find from The Graphics Fairy site itself. To give this classic element an extra flourish and make it truly “pop,” I thoughtfully added a piece of charming scrap fabric. This small detail elevates the library card from a simple printable to a tactile, visually engaging piece of the journal’s narrative, inviting interaction and evoking a sense of nostalgic charm. Each layer contributes to the rich, multi-dimensional experience of the journal.

Signatures of Nature: Weaving Themes Through Journal Pages

A vibrant spread displaying green bird motifs across two signatures, rich with themed printables.

This journal is structured with two distinct signatures, each a curated collection of pages designed to tell its own story while maintaining thematic coherence. I extensively utilized the diverse array of journal page printables found throughout the premium membership site. My selection process was guided by a desire for color harmony, choosing printables that closely matched my existing palette, and, of course, those featuring beautiful butterflies, enchanting birds, and delicate botanicals to perfectly align with my chosen theme. Furthermore, I incorporated individual graphic files from the Butterfly Garden kit and a captivating title page to create the generously sized tag that proudly resides in the pocket on the right-hand side, adding another layer of visual interest and textual depth.

A captivating page featuring an antique illustration from “Warblers of America,” elegantly finished with dyed seam tape.

A personal favorite touch in my journals is the inclusion of old book pages, which instantly add a layer of history and unique texture. In this particular journal, a page from “Warblers of America,” beautifully illustrated by John Henry Dick, finds its place. The delicate artwork of the warblers resonates perfectly with the journal’s avian theme. To complete the page and enhance its vintage charm, a touch of matching dyed seam tape was added, providing a subtle yet impactful finish that frames the illustration and integrates it seamlessly into the journal’s aesthetic.

The Grand Finale: An Accordion Folder of Surprises

An enticing view of the journal’s back, revealing a cleverly hidden assemblage secured by an accordion folder.

The back assemblage of the journal is a true masterclass in hidden compartments and interactive elements, all artfully tucked away beneath an enchanting accordion folder. This folder is securely fastened with a charming button and string closure, hinting at the treasures within. The act of untying and flipping open this folder unveils a delightful cascade of three additional flaps, each opening in a different direction: one upwards, one to the left, and one downwards, creating a truly dynamic experience. This multi-layered reveal is designed to delight and surprise, offering a tangible sense of discovery with every flip.

The unfolded accordion folder, showcasing a large pocket containing an aged letter and a petite envelope.

Delving deeper into this inventive structure, the bottom layer features a generously sized pocket. Within this pocket, I’ve placed a printed and carefully aged copy of a letter, originally included in the Tattered Paper Treasures kit. This inclusion adds a touch of historical intrigue and a personal narrative element to the journal. The bottom flap itself transforms into a quaint little envelope, holding its own charm. When this flap is flipped down, yet another hidden pocket is revealed, perfectly sized for stashing tickets, tiny notes, or other precious bits of ephemera, ensuring every corner holds a secret waiting to be found.

The left and top flaps of the accordion, featuring a delicate window pocket and intricately handmade envelopes.

The left flap of this ingenious construction unveils another charming window pocket. Within its transparent frame, I’ve nestled a delicate note card, exquisitely edged with frayed fabric, adding a tactile and rustic touch. The top flip is a truly special element: a meticulously handmade envelope, and even more charmingly, it features yet another handmade envelope secured to its front. Both of these handcrafted envelopes offer perfect, intimate spaces for tucking away personal notes, cherished journaling entries, or any small treasures that contribute to the journal’s ongoing story. Each detail, no matter how small, is thoughtfully designed to enhance the journaling experience.

Thank you for taking this wonderful journey with me through my Butterflies, Birds, and Botanicals journal. It was a joy to create and an even greater joy to share. I hope it inspires you to create your own unique assemblage journal filled with personal touches and hidden discoveries. See you soon for another creative adventure!
