For my swansong project as a cherished member of The Graphics Fairy design team, I felt compelled to create something truly exceptional, a piece that resonated deeply with my personal journey. This particular journal has been a quiet concept, gently taking shape in the back of my mind for many years. Yet, the timing never felt quite right, until now. This August marks a significant milestone: my husband and I will celebrate our 15th wedding anniversary. And while it may sound like a heartfelt cliché, our wedding day truly stands as one of the happiest days of my entire life. Every person I loved dearly was present, and every cherished aspect of my life was beautifully interwoven into the fabric of that day. It was also, in many ways, one of the most fulfilling creative projects I’ve ever embarked upon. We didn’t have an abundance of financial resources, but what we did possess was an unwavering vision: an authentic English tea party – a flamboyant, wonderfully eclectic, and utterly whimsical affair, brimming with wit, unbridled fun, and overflowing heart.

The Genesis of a Dream: A Mad Tea-Party Beginning

The initial spark of inspiration for our wedding theme, and subsequently for this journal, ignited from a captivating 1907 illustration by the legendary Arthur Rackham for “Alice in Wonderland.” Specifically, the scene titled “A Mad Tea-Party” captivated my imagination: “The table was a large one, but the three were all crowded at one corner of it. “No room! No room!” they cried out when they saw Alice coming. “There’s plenty of room!” said Alice indignantly, and she sat down in a large arm-chair at one end of the table.” Alice’s dress in Rackham’s evocative image featured the most exquisite faded pink roses, and the inviting armchair she occupied was rendered in a dreamy, dusky blue hue. This particular scene, with its blend of whimsy and elegance, undeniably planted the very first seed for our unique wedding theme, setting the stage for a celebration that was both memorable and deeply personal.

Healing Through Art: Memory Boxes, Grief, and Rediscovery

Surprisingly, my husband and I never created a traditional wedding album. Our incredibly talented photographer friends beautifully captured the essence of the day, and we certainly printed a select few of our most cherished favorites. However, everything else – the intricately handmade invitations, the charming “Eat Me” labels, delicate vintage doilies, precious scraps of leftover fabric, and tenderly pressed flowers – was carefully packed away into various memory boxes. For years, I told myself that I simply hadn’t found the time to properly assemble them. But as time passed, a deeper realization dawned upon me: it was something far more profound than a lack of time. In the years that followed our joyous wedding, we tragically lost many of the beloved people who had been there to celebrate with us. Opening those memory boxes became an increasingly difficult, almost painful, task. They were simply too full of raw feeling, too potent with the echoes of cherished voices now silenced, and too raw with grief.

Recently, however, I found myself revisiting those old photographs with fresh eyes, discovering nuances and moments I hadn’t truly perceived before. I’ve always held a deep affection for photo editing – having utilized Adobe software since my art college days in the 90s – but modern tools like Lightroom have elevated that passion to an entirely new level. I’ve painstakingly re-edited our original digital photos, meticulously adjusting lighting, refining focus, and perfecting tones, all to imbue them with the soft, dreamy, and ethereal atmosphere that our wedding day so richly deserved. Some of these re-imagined images will be luxuriously printed on sumptuously soft velvet photo paper and tenderly tucked into the pages of this journal. Others will find their home in a delicate pale blue leather photo book, complete with a beautifully handmade fabric slipcover designed to perfectly match the journal’s aesthetic.

Crafting the Legacy: The Journal’s Physical Foundation

The foundation for this significant journal began with an aged dictionary cover, acquired years ago as part of a job lot. Measuring a generous 11×9 inches, it was absolutely perfect for accommodating 10×8 inch photo prints, which was a key requirement for me. My vision for the journal was clear: I wanted it to feel intrinsically connected to our wedding, as if it could have quietly rested on a charming table beneath the marquee, an organic part of the day itself, infused with its spirit and charm.

The journal’s cover is bound in evocative layers of memory: exquisite designer taffeta, delicate lace, and a charming handmade porcelain charm. A significant amount of the fabric used came from my own wedding projects – I had the wonderful experience of making my wedding dress, three bridesmaid dresses, two adorable flower girl dresses, and even a custom cravat for my husband. This meant I had plenty of precious leftover fabric to work with. I was incredibly fortunate to discover two large remnants of pale blue designer taffeta, originally rejected by a couture house, and their subtle tones harmonized beautifully with the existing lace I had on hand. To craft the book cloth, I meticulously ironed interfacing onto the taffeta, providing stability and structure. For adhesion, I opted for extra-wide double-sided adhesive sheets instead of traditional PVA glue, a deliberate choice to prevent any potential staining on the delicate fabrics. While these sheets are admittedly more expensive, the impeccably clean finish they provided was unequivocally worth the investment for a project as deeply personal and special as this one.

A Ceremony Captured: Reimagining the Wedding Service Booklet

One of the most profoundly lovely and rewarding elements to work on was the integration of our original wedding service booklet. I meticulously created a brand new cover for it, designed to seamlessly match the overarching aesthetic of the rest of the journal, tying everything together harmoniously. I then embellished it using the exquisite floral marriage certificate printable from The Graphics Fairy, adding a touch of timeless elegance. On the inside cover, I tenderly affixed a cherished photo of my husband and me, captured just moments after our ceremony, a candid snapshot of pure joy. Adjacent to this, I placed a delicately crafted wedding ephemera journal pocket, fashioned from another beautiful printable template. This pocket now cradles a small, charming luggage tag, ready to bear the handwritten titles of the hymns and music that graced our service – a quiet, intimate keepsake of the melodies and sounds that shaped our special day. On the very first page, I thoughtfully layered the beautiful ribbon heart printable and printed one of our chosen readings – E. E. Cummings’ poignant poem, “I carry your heart with me” – onto translucent vellum. This delicate vellum piece was then sealed with a shimmering gold wax, allowing it to be opened and read, much like a precious moment carefully folded and preserved within the pages of the book, waiting to be rediscovered.

Echoes of Emotion: Preserving Priceless Speeches

Another truly precious detail I meticulously incorporated was a small, bespoke folder, expertly crafted from The Graphics Fairy’s versatile Envelope King printable. I carefully lined its interior with the elegant Beautiful Script background, also from The Graphics Fairy, instantly giving it the evocative feeling of an old, sealed letter or a secret note from a bygone era. Tucked gently inside this charming little folder are the original, heartfelt speeches from our wedding day: my husband’s speech, which moved everyone to both tears and laughter; my brother’s deeply touching speech as he gracefully gave me away; and our best woman’s wonderfully funny, dry-witted toast, which perfectly captured the celebratory spirit. To further personalize this keepsake, I created a delicate band using a piece of pale blue ribbon that I had carefully saved from our wedding day itself, and added another exquisite handmade porcelain charm, this one exquisitely embossed with our precise wedding date. It’s a small but powerful collection of words that truly shaped the emotional landscape of our celebration.

Exquisite Details: Thoughtful Embellishments and Found Treasures

During the creation process, I noticed that the dark blue of the original dictionary cover subtly showed through the pale taffeta, a detail I wanted to soften. To remedy this, I first meticulously wrapped the board in calico, carefully backed with interfacing, creating a clean and neutral base. I also ingeniously repurposed the back of a heart-shaped photo frame, covering it in a slightly deeper-toned blue taffeta to provide a complementary accent. A delicate porcelain charm, which I personally crafted for our wedding day – featuring our initials elegantly impressed into clay and then hand-painted in that dreamy dusky blue – now gracefully embellishes the journal’s cover, a constant reminder of our union. Furthermore, a meaningful brooch that I wore on our wedding day (which I later had transformed into a ring, a testament to its sentimental value) is now lovingly stitched onto the spine of the journal, anchoring it physically and emotionally to our story.

Each tiny detail, each carefully chosen element, represents a small keepsake, stitched with immense care into the larger tapestry of our story, making this junk journal a living, breathing archive of love and memories.

A Living Archive: Pages as a Dynamic Memory Box

I deliberately kept the inner pages of the journal loose, opting for a design that allows for future additions and expansion, making it feel more like a dynamic memory box rather than a rigidly bound book. This approach allows the story to continue unfolding over time. I still possessed the very first fashion illustration I ever created of my wedding dress, a cherished piece that now finds its place within these pages. Alongside it, I’ve included delicate swatches of the original fabric and threads I used, providing a tactile connection to the creation of my gown. The vintage invoice image from The Graphics Fairy instantly spoke to me, and I knew I had to include it. I crafted a beautiful digital collage in Photoshop, strategically utilizing the Forget-Me-Not image in various playful positions, layering in a subtle tiara, a classic bride illustration, and elegant dresses inspired by the 2007 John Galliano Dior collection, which served as a monumental inspiration for my own gown’s design. This page is a testament to the blend of personal history and artistic influence.

From my bridal bouquet, I had carefully pressed a few delicate sprigs of gypsophila, and these now gracefully adorn both the bride and groom pages within the journal, symbolizing everlasting love. Our buttonholes also prominently featured charming forget-me-nots, and miraculously, I discovered one I had pressed at the time – it had been tucked away, forgotten, and now looks absolutely stunning, perfectly preserved within the journal’s pages. For my husband’s page, I wanted to capture his unique style. He wore a dashing vintage navy blue tuxedo with a sophisticated top hat, and I found just the right imagery within The Graphics Fairy’s Seamstress bundle by searching for “tuxedo” and “top hat.” I thoughtfully altered the color of the suit in the image to precisely match his, and added a few extra personal details to truly make it feel like him. I also incorporated some antique cigarette cards from my personal stash and a porcelain wax seal I crafted many moons ago, adding layers of history and personal touch. One of my absolute favorite pages is beautifully simple: the bow page. When I first encountered the exquisite bow illustration on The Graphics Fairy site, I was instantly smitten. I meticulously recreated it in real life, crafting tiny bows using all the leftover ribbons and some of the precious fabrics from our wedding. It serves as a gentle, tactile memory – small gestures beautifully tied up with profound meaning.

Looking ahead, I eagerly plan to create additional pages dedicated to our wonderful bridesmaids, the adorable flower girls, and the magical marquee itself, which was such an enchanting and pivotal part of our celebration. The Delft Blue bundle from The Graphics Fairy has proven particularly effective here, offering a delightful nod to the oversized cut-out cups, saucers, and teapots that whimsically adorned our marquee – another playful and charming homage to our beloved Mad Hatter’s tea party theme. The timeless appeal and versatility of The Graphics Fairy printables have genuinely breathed new life into these precious memories, making everything feel vibrant and alive once more. It has been an incredibly lovely experience to rekindle that excitement for our special day, and I absolutely cannot wait to add even more layers to this evolving keepsake.
