Meet the Artist: Emily Oliver and Her Vintage Writing Inspiration
Hello everyone, I’m Emily Oliver, and I’m incredibly excited to be a new member of The Graphics Fairy Design Team! This month, I’m presenting my “Pen and Ink” junk journal, a project that truly captures the essence of a vintage writing experience. For those interested, this journal will be available in my Etsy shop, with a direct link provided below.
Choosing a theme for this journal was quite a delightful challenge, given the immense selection available on The Graphics Fairy’s Premium Membership site. Every time I explored the beautiful options, I found myself captivated by new possibilities, constantly rethinking my initial ideas. Ultimately, I settled on a “vintage writing journal” theme, which perfectly aligned with the “Pen and Ink” concept, allowing me to delve into classic literary aesthetics. This journal measures a comfortable 6 ½ inches by 4 ¾ inches, featuring a sturdy 2-inch spine that promises ample room for memories and creativity. Inside, you’ll find six carefully constructed signatures, each containing between five to seven double-sided pages. The color palette predominantly features soothing creams and rich, vintage dark tones, creating an ideal canvas for personal journaling, sketching, and intricate collages.
Crafting the Cover: A Blend of Elegance and Ingenuity
The cover of this “Pen and Ink” junk journal is a true highlight, crafted from a beautifully marbled image applied to both the front and back. This gives the journal an immediate sense of antique sophistication. For the spine, I embraced a unique upcycling approach: I repurposed an empty wrapping paper roll, providing a robust base. This roll was then meticulously covered with a humble brown paper bag, which I distressed with various inks. The result is a wonderfully textured, leather-like appearance that adds to the journal’s vintage charm. For fellow crafters looking to explore cover-making techniques, The Graphics Fairy website offers a wealth of helpful tutorials that can guide you through similar processes.
Inside the Cover: Functional Beauty and Hidden Treasures
Upon opening the journal, the inside cover reveals a thoughtfully designed space. Here, I’ve included a functional notepad, perfect for jotting down spontaneous thoughts or important dates. Accompanying this are several charming images sourced directly from The Graphics Fairy, adding to the journal’s cohesive aesthetic. A particular delight is a small, flip-down envelope, which I meticulously sealed with a handmade wax seal, imbuing it with an old-world feel. This tiny treasure trove is filled with an assortment of ephemera, carefully selected from one of the many printable kits available through The Graphics Fairy Premium Membership, offering a delightful surprise to anyone who discovers it.
Pages of Inspiration: Collages, Pockets, and Personal Touches
Each page within this “Pen and Ink” journal tells its own story, meticulously crafted with layers of vintage charm. One notable spread features a beautiful collage, artfully combining a delicate vintage floral image with an authentic-looking vintage postage image, both acquired from The Graphics Fairy site. This arrangement evokes the romantic notion of a handwritten love letter, further enhanced by the inclusion of quaint envelopes, inviting the viewer to imagine notes and sentiments exchanged across time.
Another ingenious feature involves two envelopes: a printable coin envelope and a standard envelope, both enhanced with carefully cut windows. These windows were then backed with vintage glassine, adding a delicate, translucent quality. Inside, these charming little pockets are brimming with an array of stamps and labels, all sourced from the “Parcel Post” kit, one of the many themed bundles available to premium members. This not only adds visual interest but also provides interactive elements for the journal keeper.
Continuing the journey through the journal, you’ll discover a charming little pocket ingeniously fashioned from a vintage glassine sleeve. Tucked within this pocket is a personal vintage photograph from my own cherished collection, adding a unique, personal touch. Adjacent to it, a small tag adorned with a key image, which I downsized from a Graphics Fairy image and then enhanced with some stamping, perfectly complements the vintage aesthetic. The key symbolizes secrets and stories waiting to be unlocked, a fitting metaphor for a journal.
Another creative element is a tuck spot I crafted from a recycled junk mail envelope. This humble beginning was transformed by covering it with elegant washi tape and then very carefully cutting around the existing window, giving it a polished, integrated look. Into this tuck spot, I placed a collage tag, adorned with various blue ephemera elements drawn from “The Author” kit, another fantastic resource from The Graphics Fairy’s collection. This page beautifully encapsulates the journal’s theme of writing and creativity.
Further into the journal, you’ll discover a handmade tag and a distinct pocket, ingeniously cut from an image of a vintage book cover, sourced directly from The Graphics Fairy’s extensive library. Within this charming pocket, I’ve tucked an assortment of labels and various cut-outs, all derived from their versatile printables. This section offers ample space for notes, small photos, or additional ephemera, enhancing the journal’s functionality and aesthetic appeal.
Finally, at the back of the journal, I created a practical and visually appealing file folder stack, complete with gusseted pockets. This innovative storage solution is perfect for organizing all my remaining images from the printable kits, along with other cherished vintage ephemera. It ensures that no precious piece goes unused and provides future space for the journal’s owner to add their own collected treasures. Every element of this “Pen and Ink” junk journal has been thoughtfully chosen and crafted to inspire creativity and celebrate the timeless beauty of vintage aesthetics. We hope you find as much joy in exploring it as Emily did in creating it!
