Craft Your Own Wood Riser Tray

Elevate Your Home Decor: Crafting a Gorgeous DIY Wooden Riser Tray

Hello, creative community! I’m Diana from Dreams Factory, and I’m thrilled to share a project that’s close to my heart today: the DIY Wooden Riser Tray. This endeavor beautifully merges practicality with personalized style, transforming simple wood cutting boards and natural wood beads into stunning decorative accents. But here’s the twist: we’ll be using coffee in a truly unique way to achieve a captivating aged finish that adds character and charm. This project is not just super chic and adorable; it’s also incredibly affordable, making it a perfect addition to elevate your home decor and bring a touch of handmade elegance into your life.

In the world of interior design, small details often make the biggest impact. A wooden riser tray, while seemingly simple, can instantly elevate items, create visual interest, and organize your cherished possessions with style. Whether you’re aiming for a farmhouse aesthetic, a shabby chic vibe, or a classic French country look, this DIY project offers endless possibilities for customization.

The beauty of this project lies in its flexibility. You can breathe new life into old, unused wood cutting boards, giving them a purpose beyond the kitchen. Alternatively, you can purchase new untreated wood boards, which are readily available and often quite inexpensive. For those with the right tools and a knack for woodworking, cutting your own boards is another fantastic option, allowing you to tailor the size and shape to your exact preferences. The key here is to opt for untreated, plain wood cutting boards. This raw, natural surface is crucial for achieving the desired effect with our special staining technique, ensuring the wood can fully absorb the unique color and texture we’re aiming for.

The Unexpected Charm of Coffee Staining Wood

You might find it surprising, but for this project, we’re going to use coffee to stain our untreated wood cutting boards! While it might seem unconventional, using coffee as a natural stain is a fantastic way to achieve a rich, aged, and wonderfully rustic look. This isn’t my first foray into using coffee for crafting – you might remember my Faux Rusted French Labels and my DIY French Script Paper Feathers, where coffee played a key role in achieving that perfect vintage feel. However, this marks my inaugural experience applying it directly to wood, and the results have been nothing short of spectacular.

So, why coffee? My passion for experimenting with different mediums and sharing my discoveries with you is a huge motivator. Beyond that, I had a strong intuition that coffee would be the perfect medium to achieve the specific aged, worn, and authentic look I envisioned for these trays. And my intuition was spot on! The natural tannins in coffee react beautifully with wood, imparting a warm, earthy tone that mimics years of natural aging, without the harsh chemicals often found in commercial stains. It’s an eco-friendly, budget-friendly, and incredibly satisfying way to transform plain wood into something with deep character.

One of the most fascinating aspects of using coffee as a stain is its unique interaction with water. Unlike many stains that set permanently, coffee is ‘activated’ again and again upon contact with moisture. This property proved invaluable when I applied a slightly diluted white chalk paint over the coffee-stained wood. The renewed activation of the coffee created an exquisite blend of hues, subtle shadows, and captivating textures that I instantly fell in love with. It’s this dynamic interplay that gives the risers their distinct, hand-painted charm. Furthermore, when I later applied waterslide decal paper to add beautiful French decorations, the water involved in the decal transfer process reactivated the coffee once more, adding even greater depth and intriguing variations to the overall aged aesthetic. The layers of distressing and staining create a truly artisanal finish.

Supplies for Your DIY Wooden Riser Tray Project

Gathering your materials beforehand ensures a smooth and enjoyable crafting experience. Here’s a comprehensive list of what you’ll need to create your beautiful wooden riser trays:

  • Untreated Wooden Cutting Boards: I recommend one large (approximately 25 cm or 10 inches) and one small (approximately 20 cm or 8 inches) for a varied display. The untreated surface is essential for proper coffee staining.
  • Wooden Beads: These will serve as the feet for your risers. I used 4 large (25 mm) for the larger board and 4 small (20 mm) for the smaller board. Ensure they have a flat side or can be easily flattened for better adhesion.
  • Pencil: For marking and tracing.
  • Ruler: Essential for accurate measurements and straight lines.
  • Strong Wood Glue: A reliable adhesive that dries clear is crucial to securely attach the beads to the boards.
  • French Graphics: Our free printable French postcard or any other French-themed designs you prefer.
  • Waterslide Decal Paper: (Ensure it’s compatible with your printer type, e.g., laserjet or inkjet). This is the key to seamlessly transferring our French graphics.
  • Laserjet Printer: (Or an inkjet printer if you have inkjet-compatible decal paper).
  • Scissors: For cutting out your decals.
  • Small Bowl with Water: For activating the waterslide decals.
  • Paper Towels: For blotting, cleaning, and removing excess water/paint.
  • Strong Coffee: Prepare 1/2 cup of robust coffee by simmering 3 tablespoons of coffee grinds in 1 cup of water for 10 minutes, then cooling and straining. This concentrated brew is our natural wood stain.
  • White Chalk Paint: Slightly diluted to achieve a desirable translucent, distressed effect.
  • Two Brushes (Large and Small) for Coffee: Dedicated brushes for applying the coffee stain.
  • Two Brushes (Large and Small) for Paint: Separate brushes for the chalk paint application.
  • Plastic Bag: To protect your working surface from coffee stains and paint spills.
  • Candle (Optional): For a simple distressing technique that reveals layers.
  • 120 or 180 Grit Sandpaper (Optional): For additional distressing and smoothing.
  • Matte Finish Spray OR Other Water-based Sealer: To protect your finished trays and decals, ensuring longevity.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Crafting Your Wooden Riser Tray

Follow these detailed steps to bring your DIY Wooden Riser Trays to life, transforming simple materials into charming decorative pieces for your home.

1. Initial Setup and Printable Preparation: Begin by gathering all your listed supplies. Prepare your strong coffee and print out the beautiful French postcards on your waterslide decal paper. Ensure your printer settings are correct for decal paper, as this is crucial for a crisp image transfer.

2. Sizing Your Decals for the Boards: To perfectly size your French graphics, place a plate on top of your wooden board. This will help you determine the ideal circular area for your decal. Now, place that same plate over your printed decal. If the plate creates a perfectly rounded shape that fits entirely within the decal’s design, use a ballpoint pen to carefully trace around the plate. Repeat this process for the smaller wood board and its corresponding smaller decal, using a smaller sized plate if necessary. This ensures your decals will fit flawlessly onto your round boards.

3. Cutting Your Decals: Once traced, use your sharp scissors to meticulously cut out the two French decals, following the precise lines you just traced. You should now have two perfectly rounded decal shapes, poised and ready to add their vintage charm to your risers.

4. Preparing and Attaching the Riser Feet: Flip your cutting boards over to the bottom side. Using your ruler and pencil, carefully trace two perpendicular lines that intersect precisely in the middle of each board, effectively dividing the circular surface into four equal “slices,” much like cutting a cake. These lines will guide the placement of your wooden beads. Position each wooden bead at the end of each line to visualize their final placement and ensure aesthetic balance. Once satisfied, dip each bead into a generous amount of strong wood glue and carefully adhere it to the marked spot on the board. I found that a combination of wood glue and Mod Podge (which doubles as an adhesive) worked well, but any strong, clear-drying wood adhesive will suffice. If your beads have pre-drilled holes, you might notice a slightly smaller surface area for adhesion. If you’re concerned about them not adhering completely, consider filling the bead holes with wood filler first, allowing it to dry, and then gluing them to the boards for maximum stability. Allow the glue to dry completely – ideally overnight – before proceeding to the next step. Patience here ensures durable feet for your risers.

5. Coffee Staining Your Wood: Now for the truly unique part – coffee staining! Before you begin, lay down a plastic bag or newspaper to thoroughly protect your working surface. Coffee can stain intensely, and we want it only on our wood, not on your countertop! Using a large brush, generously apply the strong coffee stain to completely cover the entire surface of your cutting boards and the newly attached wooden feet. For demonstration purposes, the smaller board in the image was stained the night before, illustrating the rich, darker tone achievable with a few layers. Remember, the wet coffee will appear darker than its final dry color. Apply additional layers, allowing each to dry partially before adding the next, until you achieve your desired intensity. More layers will result in a deeper, more intense aged appearance.

6. Drying the Coffee Stain: As the coffee begins to dry, you’ll notice the color will lighten, revealing a beautifully nuanced, aged patina. Once the main surfaces are dry, use a smaller brush to ensure the legs of your trays are also thoroughly stained. Allow everything to dry completely before moving on. This coffee staining technique is incredibly versatile – it can impart a vintage rustic look to new wood or revive the character of old pieces.

Note on Coffee & Decals: During the coffee staining process, I wanted to illustrate how the trays would look with decals at this stage. You might notice the coffee becoming activated again when the water for the decals is applied, creating interesting dark areas. However, as the coffee dries, the color will lighten again. If a purely vintage rustic look is your preference, you could stop here and simply seal the coffee-stained wood! However, if you’re aiming for that beautiful, layered French shabby chic appeal, let’s continue to the painting stage.

7. Distressing with Candle Wax (Optional but Recommended): For an authentic distressed look, rub some candle wax along the edges and any areas of your wood boards where natural wear would occur. Use a clean brush to gently remove any excess wax. This optional step creates a resist, allowing the underlying coffee stain to peek through the chalk paint later, enhancing the aged effect.

8. Painting the Legs and Margins: Dip a clean brush into your slightly diluted white chalk paint. Begin by painting the legs of your trays. Allow them to dry slightly, then move on to painting the margins of the cutting boards. Apply large, deliberate brush strokes, taking care not to apply too much pressure or completely cover the surface. The goal is to create slightly varied paint strokes and leave small, unpainted areas. This technique adds dimension, texture, and allows hints of the rich coffee stain beneath to show through, creating a truly layered and aged appearance.

9. Painting the Main Surface and Blending: Now, for the main surface of your wood boards, start painting from the middle and work your way outwards towards the margins. Again, resist the urge to completely cover the entire surface. Instead, focus on creating texture by using irregular brush strokes. The beauty is in the imperfection. While the paint is still slightly wet, use a paper towel lightly dampened with water to gently blend and distress the surface. This action will help remove some of the paint in certain areas, further exposing the underlying coffee stain. You’ll notice the magical effect of the coffee being reactivated by the water, subtly mixing with the white paint to create stunning, unique shades and tones. This blending is what gives your risers their coveted aged, French country look.

10. Final Drying and Optional Sanding: Allow everything to dry completely. This might take several hours, or even overnight, depending on humidity. Once fully dry, if you desire an even more distressed or smoother surface, you can use 180 or 120 grit sandpaper to gently sand the edges and flat surfaces, further revealing the layers of coffee and wood beneath the paint.

11. Applying Waterslide Decals: I adore waterslide decals for their ease of use and professional finish, which is why I’ve chosen them for adding our French postcards to the wood boards. Here’s how to apply them: Begin by carefully cutting out your printed decals. Submerge each decal in a small bowl of water for a few seconds until the image begins to slide easily from its backing paper. The chalk paint’s dry finish requires a small adjustment: add a little water to the specific area on the wood surface where you intend to place the decal. This slight moisture will allow you to easily slide and center the decal. Carefully position the decal onto your wood board, gently sliding the white backing paper out from underneath. Once placed, use a paper towel to carefully remove any excess water and gently smooth out any air bubbles, working from the center outwards. Work quickly but carefully to avoid wrinkling the delicate decal. The reactivated coffee underneath will add a lovely depth to the decal’s appearance as it dries.

Apply a matte finish spray or a high-quality water-based sealer evenly over all surfaces, including the decals and the wood. This protective layer will seal in your artwork, guard against moisture, and ensure the longevity of your stunning creations.
