A Warm Welcome from Marie Willetts: The Creator of “Touch of Bleu”

Hello, wonderful Graphics Fairy fans! I’m Marie, and it’s an absolute pleasure to share my very first Design Team Project with you all. Hailing from the charming landscapes of Cornwall in the UK, I’m a petite (a mere 4’8”!), 50-something woman with a perpetual mug of tea in hand. While I’m incredibly excited to showcase my work, I must confess to a few nerves, as the collective talent within The Graphics Fairy community is truly extraordinary. It’s hard not to feel inspired by the sheer volume of fabulous projects shared here!

One of the many aspects I adore about The Graphics Fairy is the unparalleled freedom it offers to manipulate and personalize vintage images to perfectly suit any creative vision. I genuinely enjoy the entire process: leisurely perusing the extensive site, carefully selecting the perfect images, and then ingeniously transforming them into beautiful collages for a journal page or a decorative tag. It’s an incredibly fulfilling creative journey!

The particular journal I’m delighted to share with you today is designed in a convenient traveler’s notebook size, measuring approximately 8×4.5 inches. I’ve affectionately named this creation ‘Touch Of Bleu’. Its overall aesthetic leans towards a serene, neutral palette, but as you’ll soon discover, it features delightful and artful sprinklings of blue throughout, adding that signature touch of charm and elegance.

The Allure of the “Touch of Bleu” Cover and Unique Closure

Doesn’t a side view of a beautifully crafted journal just make your heart sing? The gentle whisper of different pages, the subtle peeking of delicate lace trims – it all beckons you to lean closer, to explore its secrets. It’s simply irresistible, wouldn’t you agree? For the closure of this particular junk journal, I’ve incorporated a truly special element. I recently acquired a charming book of French portraits, and among its pages, I discovered the exquisite image of a graceful lady tenderly holding her dog. This captivating portrait, imbued with vintage charm, served as the perfect, elegant tie closure, setting the tone for the journey within.

Stepping Inside: Delicate Details and Hidden Treasures

Once the elegant tie closure is gently untied and removed, you are immediately greeted by this wonderfully delicate shoe image. This particular piece of ephemera hails from the enchanting French Blue and Cream Ephemera bundle, a perfect choice to complement the journal’s theme. One can easily imagine a beautiful, young French woman, elegant and poised, adorning these very darling shoes, stepping out for a stroll through Parisian streets. This subtle yet impactful detail immediately draws the viewer into the romantic, vintage world of the journal.

In this precious photograph, you can observe how I’ve meticulously added a charming little lace and button cluster to the top corner of the page, creating a subtle focal point. This cluster is carefully layered on top of a perfectly matching lace pocket, adding depth and texture. Peeking out from underneath, just subtly visible, is one of my custom-collaged journal pages, which I affectionately refer to as my ‘paper stories’. These detailed collages are designed to offer glimpses of beauty and intrigue, and I’m excited to show you these pages in much greater detail during the video flip-through.

Adding a Splash of “Bleu”: A Parisian Lady’s Elegance

Here, we have a wonderful example of how to introduce a vibrant splash of color into an otherwise neutral journal, achieving a striking yet harmonious effect. My process began by artfully collaging the background using various exquisite papers sourced from The Graphics Fairy’s French Blue and Cream collection, establishing a rich, layered foundation. I then painstakingly fussy-cut a stunning full-length Parisian lady, an elegant image I discovered within my personal stash of vintage treasures, and thoughtfully positioned her to command attention on the page. To further enhance the composition, I incorporated several smaller pieces of delicate ephemera, again drawing from the versatile French Blue and Cream collection. The final touch, a thin strip of beautiful blue lace, not only reinforces the journal’s namesake “bleu” theme but also adds a delightful element of texture and sophistication to the page.

A Favorite Page: The Art of Layering and Varied Sizes

This particular page has undoubtedly become one of my absolute favorites within the entire journal. I am captivated by the way it beautifully contrasts against the slightly larger page underneath, creating an intriguing visual dynamic. Incorporating pages of differing sizes is a creative technique I frequently employ in my junk journals. I find it adds that crucial extra bit of definition and depth, making the overall presentation far more pleasing and engaging to the eye. This specific element is actually a charming tag, which I meticulously crafted using one of the versatile journal page printables as its foundational base. Subsequently, I selected an exquisite floral frame from the Vintage Album Frames bundle and ingeniously transformed it into a functional pocket, accentuating it with a delicate flower in the corner. To complete the top portion of the tag, I added a piece of beautifully embossed handmade paper, perfectly complemented by a rich, dark blue trim, tying back to the “Touch of Bleu” theme.

Simple Image Magic: The Elegance of a Single Flower

I specifically wanted to highlight this page because it perfectly illustrates a quick, effortless, yet incredibly effective method for utilizing individual images to create striking visual impact. For this design, I selected a vibrant petunia flower from the delightful Butterfly Garden bundle. Leveraging a simple ‘copy and paste’ function, I was able to meticulously place this elegant bloom directly onto a vintage French invoice sheet. The beauty of digital crafting truly shines here; I could precisely resize and reposition the flower exactly where I envisioned it, achieving perfect harmony with the background. Hey presto! It’s a testament to how simple techniques, when applied thoughtfully, can yield truly stunning and professional-looking results in your junk journal projects.

Pockets, Tags, and Layers: A Feast for the Eyes

In my experience, incorporating various elements like intricately designed lace pockets and a diverse selection of die-cut and embossed papers significantly elevates the visual appeal and tactile interest of your junk journal. As you can clearly see on these pages, such additions transform a simple collection of papers into a captivating artistic narrative. You’ll also notice my deliberate use of different sized tags and journal cards, strategically placed to create a rich tapestry of layers and textures, truly making the pages a feast for the eyes. The particular tags I’ve chosen for this spread are sourced from the versatile French Blue and Cream Tags and Collage sheets, perfectly complementing the journal’s overall aesthetic. To one of these tags, I’ve added a delicate piece of lace and a charming little button. It’s remarkable how sometimes, just the tiniest, most thoughtful detail can make an immense difference, don’t you think? These small touches add character, depth, and a unique personality to each journal entry.

Hidden Delights: Journaling Spots and Ephemera Pockets

On the left page of this spread, I’ve cleverly incorporated one of the elegant Graphic Fairy bookmarks, enhancing it further with a beautiful gold vase image meticulously selected from The Gilded Age bundle. This adds a touch of classic sophistication. Opposite this, on the right page, I’ve crafted an engaging flip-out element. For this, I utilized some charming notepaper from the Forget Me Not bundle, carefully tearing it to create a rustic edge, then securing it with a piece of aged tape for an authentic vintage feel. Beyond this, I’ve also designed a discreet pocket, perfectly sized to hold various pieces of precious ephemera. I absolutely adore including plenty of these versatile journaling spots and hidden compartments in my junk journals. There’s something truly special about discovering a secret little place within the pages, holding thoughts, memories, or additional decorative elements. These hidden treasures are, without a doubt, the best!

A Sweet Farewell: The Enduring Charm of “Touch of Bleu”

And now, behold this absolutely adorable little bird tag! Isn’t it just the cutest addition? I couldn’t resist concluding this visual journey with yet another glimpse of those incredibly darling French shoes, simply because I am utterly captivated by their charm! I sincerely hope you have thoroughly enjoyed this delightful wander through the pages of my French-vibe journal, affectionately named ‘Touch Of Bleu’. It has been a true pleasure sharing my creative process and the finished piece with you.
