Prepare to be enchanted by this unique Milk Carton Craft, where we’ll guide you through the process of creating beautiful French planter boxes to house your very own Tabletop Fairy Forest. This delightful DIY craft is not only a fantastic way to embrace sustainable practices but also serves as a perfect, personalized addition to your holiday decor or special occasion tablescapes. Dive into the comprehensive tutorial below and embark on this whimsical crafting journey.

This charming project draws its inspiration from the grand garden boxes meticulously designed in 1670 by André Le Nôtre. These magnificent planters were created for the cultivation of delicate orange trees at the illustrious Château de Versailles during the glorious reign of Louis XIV. Our humble adaptation captures the essence of this historical elegance, allowing you to bring a piece of French garden artistry into your home with an eco-friendly twist. The classic design relies on a basic square box as its foundation, which immediately sent us on a treasure hunt through the recycle bin. You might be surprised at the perfect alternatives you can discover lurking in your pantry or recycling stash!

Crafting Your Miniature Versailles: Supplies for Your Milk Carton Fairy Forest

To embark on the creation of your very own Magical Tabletop Fairy Forest, you’ll need a carefully curated selection of basic ingredients and tools. Most of these can be found around your home or at a local craft store, making this an accessible and enjoyable project.

  • Small square open-topped boxes (3): These are the stars of our show! Think milk cartons, half & half cartons, or even small juice boxes. The key is a square base.
  • A Sturdy Craft Knife: Essential for precise cuts. Always use with caution and on a protected surface.
  • A ruler: For accurate measurements and creating straight lines.
  • A pen or marker: To mark your cutting lines clearly.
  • A Hot Glue Gun + Glue Sticks: Your trusty companion for quick and strong adhesion.
  • White Cardstock: To provide a clean, neutral base for your decorative graphics.
  • Your favorite Graphics Fairy Images: We used the exquisite French Handwriting Printable, which adds a sophisticated, vintage touch. Feel free to explore other graphics that match your aesthetic.
  • One white adhesive foam sheet: This material will create the illusion of sturdy wooden trim on your planter boxes.
  • Scissors or Snips: For smaller, precise cuts and trimming.
  • One Artificial Berry Spray + wire cutter: These will be ingeniously repurposed as decorative feet and finials for your boxes.
  • A Needle Tool (or a small nail/awl): To create pilot holes for the berry feet.
  • Foam Packing Material: Sized to fit into your French Mini Planter Boxes, cut into squares. This provides a stable base for your trees.
  • Craft Moss: (Mine came from the Dollar Store!) Adds a natural, forest-floor feel to your planters.
  • Twigs! Lots of Twigs!: Gathered from your yard, these will become your enchanting fairy trees. Look for interesting shapes and branching patterns.
  • Brown Floral Tape: For securely binding your chosen twigs into miniature fairy trees.
  • Optional: Gold Spray Paint: To add a touch of glamour and shimmer to your twig trees. Any metallic or desired color will work.
  • Optional: Your favorite shade of Distress Ink & a Blending Tool: For adding instant history and an aged, vintage patina to your finished boxes.
  • Spray Adhesive: An excellent choice for applying glitter evenly to your twig trees.
  • White School Glue: Another option for glitter application or general adhesion.
  • Glitter!: Because a fairy forest demands sparkle! Choose colors that complement your scheme.

Step-by-Step Tutorial: Building Your Enchanted Planter Boxes

For this project, standard quart milk cartons (or technically half & half cartons, but any square carton works perfectly!) proved to be the ideal choice. Their square shape is key, and with a bit of clever cutting, you can often get two boxes from one carton. For our magical forest, we’ll need three boxes.

A quick rinse and dry, and these everyday containers are ready to be transformed into something truly glorious!

1. Prepare Your Cartons

Begin by thoroughly washing and drying your chosen empty boxes or cartons. Once clean, decide which ones will best serve as your planters. Carefully measure the width of your carton. This measurement will be crucial for determining the height of your finished box to achieve that classic square planter look.

2. Mark Your First Cut Line

Using your ruler and pen, mark a cut line around the carton. This line should be the same distance from the base as the width you just measured. For example, if your carton is 2 3/4 inches wide, mark a line 2 3/4 inches up from the base. Precision here will ensure your final boxes are perfectly square and aesthetically pleasing.

3. Make the Initial Cut

With your craft knife, carefully cut along the marked line through all sides of the box or carton. Take your time to keep the line as even and straight as possible all the way around. A steady hand and a sharp blade will yield the best results.

4. Your First Perfect Square

Once cut, you’ll have your first perfectly square box. This foundational piece will serve as a template for your subsequent boxes, ensuring uniformity in your Tabletop Fairy Forest. Admire your handiwork – you’ve already started transforming ordinary into extraordinary!

5. Create Your Second Box

Now, use your first completed box to determine the precise height for cutting your second box from another carton. This method guarantees that all your planter boxes will be identical in size, creating a cohesive and polished look for your fairy forest.

6. Constructing the Third Box (from leftovers)

If you’re like me and want to utilize as much of the carton as possible, you can fashion a third box from the remaining material. Measure the height of the sides of your existing boxes. Then, cut four flaps from the carton remainder, ensuring they are long enough to overlap. For two of these flaps, create slightly angled sides. This will allow for a neat and secure closure when assembling.

7. Assembling the Base of the Third Box

Using your hot glue gun, begin assembling the flaps of your third box. First, fold in the two square flaps you cut for the base and apply hot glue to secure them. Press firmly and hold in place until the glue sets completely. This ensures a strong, flat bottom for your planter.

8. Securing the Base

Continue holding the flaps in position as the hot glue cools and hardens. This step is crucial for creating a stable and well-formed box. Once set, you should have a sturdy, open-topped square box ready for its decorative makeover.

9. Finalizing the Third Box Structure

Next, glue the slightly angled flaps, one on top of the other, to complete the base of your third box. The angled sides allow for a clean, overlapping seam. Apply a generous amount of hot glue and press them together firmly.

10. Setting the Glue

Hold the glued flaps in place until the hot glue has fully set. This ensures a durable and strong construction for your upcycled planter. Now you have three perfectly formed, square boxes, ready for the next exciting phase of decoration.

11. Conceal Bright Colors with White Cardstock

If your recycled cartons are brightly colored or feature distracting barcodes, a quick fix is in order. Cut three strips of white cardstock, each long enough to wrap around your boxes and wide enough to cover any visible branding. This provides a clean, neutral canvas for your chosen graphics.

12. Apply the White Cardstock

Adhere the white cardstock strips to your boxes using your preferred adhesive. I had my glue gun handy, so that’s what I used for quick results. Ensure the strips are smooth and well-attached. Don’t worry if there’s a tiny gap or a bit of the original color still peeking through – we’ll address that in the next step!

13. Prepare Your Graphics Fairy Images

Now for the aesthetic touch! Take your chosen Graphics Fairy images, such as the elegant French Handwriting Printable, and cut three strips. These strips should be the same width as the height of your boxes. Careful cutting here will ensure a professional finish.

14. Offset Graphics to Cover Gaps

Carefully apply these graphic strips, making sure to offset them so they cover any exposed gaps or original carton colors left from the white cardstock application. This layering technique ensures a seamless and visually appealing outer surface for your planter boxes.

15. Adhere the Graphics

Securely glue the graphic strips in place around each box. Press down gently to remove any air bubbles and ensure full adhesion. Don’t fret if your strips are slightly too short or if there are minor imperfections; the top and bottom edges of the boxes will be covered in the subsequent steps, adding a polished finish.

16. Trim Excess Graphics

Once the glue has dried, use your scissors to trim away any excess graphic paper, creating clean, crisp edges. This step prepares your boxes for the addition of the decorative foam trim, which will elevate their appearance significantly.

17. Introduce Adhesive Foam Sheets

Adhesive foam sheets are incredibly versatile and are perfect for creating the illusion of substantial wooden boards or trim. Since they are typically 12 inches long, they can easily wrap around the edges of our small boxes. This crucial step will give your planters a refined, sturdy appearance.

18. Prepare Foam for Top Edging

To create the top edging, score the adhesive foam sheet along its entire length, exactly 1/2 inch from one edge. This score line will serve as a neat fold line. Then, cut the foam at the 1-inch mark, resulting in a long strip that can be folded lengthwise. Repeat this process to create three such strips, each with a central score line.

19. Apply Foam to the Upper Edge

Carefully align the prepared foam strip with the upper edge of one of your boxes, starting at a corner. Ensure the score line runs along the top edge of the box. Gently press the adhesive side onto the box, working your way around.

20. Snip Corners for a Clean Fold

As you reach each corner, make small snips or cuts into the foam where it meets the corner. These strategic cuts will allow the foam to fold neatly and snugly over the upper edge of the box, creating sharp, professional-looking corners.

21. Fold Foam Inside the Box

Once snipped, fold the first segment of the foam strip over the top edge and adhere it to the inside of the box. This creates a beautifully finished rim that adds significant visual weight and charm to your planter box. Continue this process around all four sides.

22. Complete the Upper Edging

Work your way around the entire upper edge of the box, adding small snips at each corner and folding the flaps neatly inside. When you reach the last corner, trim away any excess foam for a clean, seamless finish. Repeat this for all three boxes.

23. Add Base Edging

Now, cut three more strips of the adhesive foam, each 1/2 inch wide. Apply these strips along the very base of each box. This lower trim mirrors the upper edging, creating a balanced and robust appearance reminiscent of classic garden planters.

24. Trim Excess Base Edging

As with the top edging, trim away any excess foam when you complete the circuit around the base of the box. Ensure the ends meet cleanly at a corner. Your planter boxes are now beautifully trimmed and ready for their enchanting details.

25. Prepare Berry Feet

Borrow an artificial berry spray (most craft enthusiasts have one lying around!) and use wire cutters to snip off 24 individual berries, ensuring each has a tiny tail of wire attached. These charming berries will serve as the elegant “feet” for your miniature planter boxes, elevating them slightly and adding a touch of whimsy.

26. Create Holes for Berry Feet

Using a needle tool (or a small nail or awl), carefully poke tiny holes into the bottom corners of each box. These pilot holes will make it easier to insert the wire tails of your berry feet, ensuring a secure and evenly spaced attachment.

27. Attach the Berry Feet

Apply a small dab of hot glue at each hole on the bottom of the box. Then, quickly insert the wire tail of one of your berries into the hole, pressing it firmly into the glue. Hold it in place until the glue sets. These delightful berries will raise your planters slightly, adding to their elegant charm.

28. Secure Berry Feet

Once the hot glue has completely set, your planter boxes will stand gracefully on their new berry feet. This small detail significantly enhances the overall vintage French planter aesthetic. Turn them upright and admire the transformation.

29. Prepare the Interior with Packing Foam

Rummage through your packing materials for some foam. Cut it into squares that fit snugly inside each box, almost filling it to the top, but leaving a slight lip for the moss. This foam will provide a stable and easily penetrable base for your twig trees.

30. Secure the Packing Foam

Apply a generous amount of hot glue to the bottom of the packing foam squares. It’s perfectly fine if the foam melts a little from the heat; it won’t affect the project. Firmly press the glued foam into each box, holding it down until the glue sets. This ensures your tree base is secure.

31. Apply Distress Ink (Optional)

For an added touch of vintage charm, you can apply your favorite shade of Distress Ink to the edges and surfaces of your boxes using a blending tool. This step gives the planters an aged, historical look, enhancing their French-inspired aesthetic.

32. Craft Your Twig Trees

Head outside and gather a collection of small, branching twigs. Group them together to form miniature trees, then use brown floral tape to bind them securely. This tape blends in naturally and holds your “tree” structure firmly. If you desire, take this opportunity to spray paint your twig trees gold (or any color that suits your theme) in a well-ventilated area.

33. Plant Your Fairy Trees

Poke a hole into the center of the foam in each box, then carefully insert the base of a twig tree. Secure it firmly with hot glue, ensuring your tree stands upright and stable. This creates the primary focal point of your miniature forest.

34. Add the Enchanting Moss

Reach for your craft moss – this natural element will bring your fairy forest to life. Apply a layer of hot glue onto the top of the foam around the base of your twig tree. Then, gently press the moss onto the glue, covering the entire foam surface. This mimics a forest floor, adding texture and authenticity.

35. Dazzle with Glitter!

No fairy forest is complete without a touch of sparkle! Apply white school glue (or a fine line of hot glue) over the moss and branches, then generously sprinkle with glitter. You can choose a classic white or silver for a frosty look, or opt for gold as I did, to complement your gilded trees. Experiment with different colors to create your unique magical aesthetic. I was definitely in a Gold Mood for this project!

36. Final Embellishments

To add a final flourish, hot glue the remaining berries at the top of each corner of your boxes, creating delicate finials. These small details perfectly cap off the elegant design. For extra shimmer, head outside and use spray adhesive on your twig trees, then sprinkle with more glitter. I may have gone a bit mad with the glitter myself – and loved every sparkly bit of it!
