Creative Upcycling: Crafting Beautiful DIY Tin Can Organizers for Your Home
Welcome to a delightful journey into the world of creative upcycling! If you’re looking for an inspiring and budget-friendly way to organize your space, you’ve landed in the perfect spot. This guide will walk you through creating charming DIY Tin Can Organizers – a project that’s not only incredibly easy but also wonderfully rewarding. Say goodbye to clutter and hello to beautifully organized craft supplies, office essentials, or whatever bits and bobs need a home.
My own inspiration for these organizers stemmed from a wonderful experience at the Haven Conference, where I had the pleasure of rooming with Johnnie from Saved by Love Creations. Johnnie is renowned for her incredible green crafts and ingenious recycling methods, and her passion for sustainable crafting definitely rubbed off on me. There’s an undeniable joy and convenience in rummaging through your recycling bin, finding exactly what you need for your next creative endeavor, and the unbeatable price tag certainly adds to the appeal!
Transforming ordinary tin cans into functional works of art is a fantastic way to embrace eco-friendly living while adding a personal touch to your home decor. These organizers, originally crafted to neatly hold my paintbrushes in my craft room, are incredibly versatile and can be adapted to suit a multitude of purposes and aesthetics. Let’s dive into how you can make your own set of these charming, repurposed containers!
Why Choose DIY Tin Can Organizers? The Benefits of Upcycling
In a world increasingly focused on sustainability and mindful consumption, upcycling projects like these tin can organizers offer numerous benefits:
- Eco-Friendly & Sustainable: By repurposing tin cans, you’re diverting waste from landfills and giving new life to items that would otherwise be discarded. This simple act reduces your environmental footprint and promotes a more sustainable lifestyle.
- Budget-Friendly: The primary materials – tin cans – are essentially free! This project allows you to create stylish and functional storage solutions without spending a fortune on expensive store-bought organizers.
- Endless Customization: One of the greatest advantages of DIY projects is the ability to personalize them entirely. You can match your organizers to your existing decor, reflect your unique style, or even create themed sets for different rooms. The possibilities for embellishments, colors, and textures are limitless.
- Versatile Functionality: While perfect for craft supplies, these organizers are not limited to one use. They can elegantly store office stationery, kitchen utensils, makeup brushes, hair accessories, small tools, and much more. Their adaptability makes them a valuable addition to any room.
- Simple & Accessible: This project is suitable for crafters of all skill levels, from beginners to experienced DIY enthusiasts. The steps are straightforward, and the materials are easy to find, making it a fun and accessible activity for everyone.
My personal organizers were adorned with burlap ribbon and embellishments by David Tutera, remnants from a previous project. While those specific supplies may no longer be available, the beauty of this craft lies in its flexibility. Burlap ribbon is widely accessible, and you likely have a treasure trove of ribbon scraps, fabric swatches, or other decorative elements waiting to be used in your craft room!
Essential Supplies for Your Tin Can Organizers Project
Before you begin, gather your materials. Remember, feel free to substitute items with what you already have or what best suits your aesthetic!
Tin Can Organizers Supplies:
- 1) Tin Cans: Collect various sizes from your kitchen – soup cans, vegetable cans, coffee cans. Ensure they are thoroughly cleaned and dried. For safety, carefully smooth down any sharp edges or use a can opener that creates smooth edges.
- 2) Burlap Ribbon: This adds a rustic and charming texture. You can find similar burlap ribbon at major retailers like Walmart, local craft supply stores, or online. Alternatively, consider using other types of ribbon (satin, grosgrain, lace), fabric scraps, patterned paper, or even simply painting the cans.
- 3) Burlap Flowers: These provide a beautiful natural touch. Any type of pretty embellishment will work perfectly – think artificial flowers, buttons, charms, small wooden cutouts, or even handmade paper flowers.
- 4) Silver Glitter: To add a touch of sparkle. While I used German Glass Glitter for its unique shine (more on this below), standard craft glitter, glitter paint, or even metallic markers can achieve a similar effect.
- 5) Elmer’s Blue School Gel Glue: An excellent, non-toxic choice for glitter application, ensuring a strong hold. Any good quality craft glue suitable for fabric and embellishments will also work.
- 6) Rhinestone Embellishments: For an extra dash of glamour and shine. Peel-and-stick rhinestones are super convenient, but you can also use individual rhinestones and apply them with craft glue, or consider pearls, beads, or small sequins.
- 7) Hot Glue Gun and Glue Sticks: Essential for quickly and securely attaching the burlap ribbon and larger embellishments to the cans. Always exercise caution when using a hot glue gun.
- 8) Scissors: For cutting ribbon and preparing embellishments.
- 9) Small Paintbrush (optional): Useful for applying glue precisely, especially for glitter.
Now that you have your materials ready, let’s get crafting!
Step-by-Step Guide to Crafting Your Tin Can Organizers
Step 1: Preparing Your Burlap Flowers
Begin by gently separating the burlap flowers from their original bunch or packaging. The flowers I used featured charming little buttons at their centers, which were lovely on their own. However, I envisioned a bit more sparkle and “bling” for my organizers. If your chosen embellishments have a central feature you wish to enhance, this is the time to prepare them. For instance, if you’re using plain fabric flowers, you might consider painting their centers or adding a decorative button before proceeding.
Step 2: Adding a Touch of Sparkle with Glitter
Now for the fun part – glitter! Using a small paintbrush or a fine-tipped applicator, carefully apply a thin layer of Elmer’s Blue School Gel Glue to the button portion (or the center) of each flower. I particularly love this specific glue for glitter applications because it creates a strong, lasting bond and is non-toxic, which always makes me happy when working on craft projects. Ensure the glue is applied evenly but not too thickly, just enough to cover the surface you want to glitter.
Step 3: Applying Your Favorite Glitter
Once the glue is applied, generously dust your favorite silver glitter over the glued areas. If you’re a regular reader of my blog, you’ll know that German Glass Glitter is my absolute favorite for its unparalleled sparkle and vintage appeal. I used it here to achieve that distinctive shimmer. When using glass glitter, it’s crucial to remember that it is made from crushed glass and is therefore not child-friendly. Always handle with care. For a safer, child-friendly alternative, standard craft glitter works wonderfully. Gently tap off any excess glitter onto a sheet of paper (which you can then fold and pour back into its container to avoid waste). Allow the glitter to dry completely according to your glue’s instructions.
Step 4: Enhancing with Rhinestone Embellishments
To add an even greater depth of sparkle and a touch of elegance, I chose to incorporate peel-and-stick rhinestones. These are incredibly convenient! Carefully place one rhinestone in the very center of each glittered flower button. The size of the rhinestones I used fit perfectly within the buttons, creating a beautiful focal point. If you’re using loose rhinestones, a tiny dot of craft glue will secure them. This step adds a luxurious finish, making your flowers truly “blingy” – and yes, that’s absolutely a word in the crafting dictionary!
Observe how the rhinestones fit perfectly in the center of the buttons, adding that desirable extra shimmer.
Step 5: Wrapping Your Cans with Burlap Ribbon
Now, let’s dress up the tin cans themselves. Measure your burlap ribbon against the height of your tin can, ensuring it will cover the desired area. Cut the burlap to the appropriate length to wrap around the entire circumference of the can, allowing for a slight overlap for a clean seam. Using your hot glue gun, apply a line of glue along the back seam of the can and carefully press one end of the burlap ribbon into place. Continue applying small beads of hot glue as you wrap the burlap tightly around the can, ensuring it lies flat and smooth. Secure the other end with hot glue, creating an invisible seam at the back. Be cautious when handling the hot glue gun to avoid burns.
Step 6: Attaching Your Embellished Flowers
For most artificial flowers or burlap embellishments, there will be a small wire or metal stem at the back. Use a pair of sturdy scissors to carefully snip off this metal stem so that the flower can sit flush against the can. Once the stem is removed, apply a generous dot of hot glue to the back of each embellished flower. Carefully press the flower onto the front of the burlap-wrapped can, holding it firmly for a few seconds until the glue sets. Arrange your flowers aesthetically, perhaps grouping a few together or placing a single, prominent one. And that’s it! Your beautiful DIY Tin Can Organizer is complete.
Tips for Success & Creative Customization
- Safety First: Always ensure your tin cans are thoroughly washed and dried. If using a standard can opener, be mindful of sharp edges. You can file them down or cover them with tape before wrapping. When working with a hot glue gun, be extremely careful to avoid burns.
- Explore Different Materials: Don’t limit yourself to burlap! Consider wrapping your cans with lace, patterned fabric, old book pages, wallpaper scraps, twine, or even decorative paper. For a painted look, use spray paint or acrylic craft paint.
- Theme Your Organizers: Create themed sets! For a rustic look, use more natural elements. For a modern vibe, opt for sleek designs and metallic paints. For a child’s room, use bright colors and whimsical embellishments.
- Vary Sizes for Visual Interest: Collecting tin cans of various heights and diameters creates a dynamic and aesthetically pleasing grouping. This also allows for storage of different sized items.
- Consider the Interior: For a polished finish, you could line the interior of the cans with felt or cork, especially if you’re storing delicate items.
- Mix and Match Embellishments: Feel free to experiment! Combine different types of ribbons, buttons, beads, charms, or even stenciled designs. The sparkle from the tin can base often coordinates beautifully with glittery embellishments, creating a cohesive and appealing look.
Beyond Craft Supplies: Versatile Storage Solutions
The beauty of these DIY Tin Can Organizers lies in their incredible versatility. While they are perfect for tidying up your craft room, holding colored pencils, markers, paintbrushes, and other artistic tools, their utility extends far beyond:
- Office Space: Keep pens, pencils, rulers, scissors, and paper clips neatly organized on your desk.
- Kitchen: Store cooking utensils, whisks, spatulas, or even fresh herbs.
- Bathroom: Organize makeup brushes, toothbrushes, hair ties, and small toiletries.
- Kids’ Rooms: A fun way to store crayons, small toys, building blocks, or art supplies.
- Workshop/Garage: Keep small tools, screws, nuts, and bolts in order.
- Entryway: A convenient spot for keys, loose change, or small mail items.
I’m so thrilled with how these turned out and am already planning to make a few more sets. My goal is to achieve ultimate organization in my new craft room, and these stylish yet practical organizers are definitely helping me get there!
