Hello, creative friends! I’m delighted to share another inspiring DIY project with you today. If you’re looking for a simple yet elegant way to protect and personalize your books, notebooks, or journals, you’ve come to the right place. We’ll be diving into the art of making “Old School” Kraft Paper Book Covers, complete with a beautiful French-inspired floral design. This timeless technique not only safeguards your cherished reads from wear and tear but also transforms them into stunning decorative pieces that reflect your unique style. Whether you’re rediscovering this classic craft from your school days or learning it for the first time, you’ll be amazed at how effortlessly these stylish covers come together.

The beauty of this project lies in its versatility. You can keep your kraft paper covers elegantly simple, allowing the natural texture and earthy tone of the paper to shine through, or you can unleash your creativity and adorn them with an array of embellishments. The possibilities are truly endless for customizing these covers to perfectly match your aesthetic preferences.

For our demonstration, we’ll be decorating these charming covers using a gorgeous black and white cherry blossom image, paired with a sophisticated French ephemera label featuring a vintage frame. To make it incredibly easy for you, all these exquisite images are conveniently included in a specially designed printable. This means you can effortlessly create these delightful beauties in no time, adding a touch of antique elegance to your personal library or craft collection.

Choosing the Perfect Kraft Paper for Your Covers

Before we dive into the creation process, let’s talk about the star of our project: kraft paper. For these covers, I personally used a high-quality kraft paper pad from Clairefontaine. What I love about this particular paper is its dual functionality – it’s perfect for both creating the sturdy covers and printing the decorative images directly onto it. This approach ensures a beautifully cohesive and professional finish for your completed book covers.

If you’re able to find this exact type of paper, fantastic! However, don’t fret if it’s not readily available. You can easily substitute it with any other type of kraft paper pads or sheets you have on hand, as long as they are suitable for printing. The key is to find paper that can withstand the printing process without smudging or bleeding, ensuring your delicate designs look crisp and clear. Many craft stores and art supply shops offer various weights and finishes of kraft paper that would work wonderfully.

Should you only have access to standard kraft paper typically used for wrapping, you can still absolutely make these covers! In this scenario, simply use the wrapping paper for the main cover structure, and then print your decorative elements on a separate sheet of thinner kraft paper or even regular white paper, which you’ll then adhere to the cover. While the colors of the base cover and the printed elements might not be perfectly identical, the overall vintage aesthetic will still be stunning. Embrace the subtle variations, as they often add to the handmade charm and character of your project.

Exclusive Free Printables for Your French-Inspired Covers

To help you effortlessly bring this project to life, I’ve created a gorgeous printable featuring elegant cherry blossom images and charming French ephemera labels. This printable offers a variety of designs in several different sizes, allowing you to easily select the perfect fit for your specific book dimensions. No more guessing or resizing – simply choose, print, and decorate!

Understanding that crafters work with different materials and preferences, I’ve included two distinct versions of the printable:

  1. Black & White Version with No Background: This minimalist version is designed for direct printing onto kraft paper. If you’re using a kraft paper pad that’s suitable for printing, this option will allow the natural texture and color of your kraft paper to show through the design, creating a truly authentic and integrated look. The absence of a background ensures that your printer ink is used efficiently and that the subtle beauty of the kraft paper is the star.
  2. Version with a Kraft-Looking Background: For those who might be printing on regular white paper but still desire that distinct kraft paper effect, this version is your perfect solution. It features a simulated kraft background integrated into the design, so when printed on white paper, it will mimic the appearance of kraft paper. This is a fantastic option if your chosen kraft paper isn’t printer-friendly, or if you simply prefer the convenience of printing on standard paper.

Both options provide stunning results, ensuring your DIY book covers have that desired vintage, French-inspired charm. Select the version that best suits your materials and vision for a seamless crafting experience.

Essential Supplies for Your Paper Book Covers Project

Gathering your materials before you begin ensures a smooth and enjoyable crafting experience. Here’s what you’ll need to create your beautiful kraft paper book covers:

  • Books, Notebooks, or Journals: Any size or type will work, from beloved novels to daily planners.
  • Kraft Paper Pad or Sheets: Essential for the covers. Look for options suitable for printing if you plan to print directly onto them.
    • Similar to mine: kraft paper pad 1 | kraft paper pad 2 | kraft paper sheets
  • Home Printer: For printing out the beautiful floral and ephemera designs.
  • Scissors: A good sharp pair for cutting the paper and delicate embellishments.
  • Glue Stick or Craft Glue:
    • Glue stick: Ideal for clean, flat adhesion of paper elements.
    • Any other craft glue: Such as Mod Podge, for more robust adhesion or if you plan to add a protective layer.

Step-by-Step Guide: Crafting Your Classic Kraft Paper Book Covers

This “old school” method of covering books is incredibly simple and doesn’t require precise measurements or complicated tools. It’s about getting hands-on and enjoying the process! Follow these steps to create perfectly fitted covers for your books.

1. Prepare Your Book and Paper

You can use any type of book you wish for this project – old paperbacks, new hardcovers, cherished journals, or even planners. The versatility is part of the fun! If you’re using pre-cut kraft paper sheets, as I did, ensure your book is slightly smaller than the paper, allowing for a comfortable margin around the edges. This might limit you to covering smaller books with pre-cut sheets. For larger books, you’ll need to cut your kraft paper to size yourself.

Ideally, aim for about 1-2 inches (2.5-5 cm) of extra paper on the top and bottom edges, and approximately 2-3 inches (5-7 cm) on the left and right sides. This extra paper provides the necessary material for folding and creating secure flaps. However, don’t worry if your margins are slightly smaller; this technique is quite forgiving. Lay your kraft paper sheet flat on your work surface and center your chosen book on top of it, ensuring even spacing around the book.

2. Create the Horizontal Creases (Top and Bottom)

With one hand, gently hold the book firmly in place on the paper. Use the fingers of your other hand to carefully make a horizontal crease along the top edge of the book. Repeat this process for the bottom edge. These initial creases will serve as your guides for the first set of folds.

Once both creases are made, carefully remove the book from the paper. Your kraft paper sheet should now clearly show two horizontal creases, marking where the top and bottom edges of your book will sit.

Using these creases as a guide, fold the top and bottom edges of the kraft paper inwards. You can use a ruler for an extra-crisp fold if you prefer, but your fingers will work perfectly fine. The goal isn’t absolute perfection, but rather neat, relatively straight folds that will snugly fit your book.

3. Create the Front Cover Flap

Now, place your book back onto the folded kraft paper, ensuring it rests perfectly within the top and bottom folds you just made. Position the book so that its front cover is aligned with one side of the paper, ready to be wrapped.

Close the kraft paper cover over the book, making sure the book remains centered. Using your fingers, carefully create a vertical crease along the edge of the book’s front cover. This crease will define the pocket for your front cover.

Open the paper cover completely and fold the section you just creased inwards, along the vertical line. This creates a neat pocket. Now, open your book and carefully tuck its front cover into this newly formed paper pocket on the left side. It should slide in quite easily, creating a snug fit.

4. Secure the Back Cover Flap

Close your book again and lay it flat on your table. Now, repeat the creasing process for the back cover. Using the book inside as your guide, make a vertical crease along the edge of the book’s back cover.

Open the book, fold the vertically creased paper inwards, and simply tuck the back cover of your book inside this new pocket. Adjust slightly to ensure a smooth, neat fit.

Congratulations! Your first “old school” kraft paper book cover is now complete! Admire its classic simplicity and the instant protection it offers.

Feel free to repeat this process for any other books you wish to cover, creating a cohesive set or a delightful mix of sizes and styles.

Elevating Your Covers: Decorative Embellishments with a French Flair

With your basic kraft paper covers skillfully crafted, it’s time to infuse them with personality and charm using our beautiful printables. This is where the true “Frenchified floral twist” comes to life!

1. Printing and Cutting Your Designs

As mentioned earlier, I utilized the printable version with no background, printing directly onto the same cut-to-size kraft paper that formed my covers. This method creates a seamless integration of design and material, which I absolutely adore. If you opted for the kraft-background printable on white paper, that’s perfectly fine too; the effect will still be wonderfully cohesive.

Once printed, carefully use your sharp scissors to cut out all the individual elements – the elegant cherry blossoms and the vintage French ephemera labels. When cutting the floral images, you have a stylistic choice: you can leave a small, delicate fussy-cut border around the edges of the flowers, which can add a slightly softer, more hand-cut feel. Alternatively, for a crisper, more defined look, you can meticulously remove all the extra paper, cutting right up to the edge of the design.

2. Strategic Placement and Adhesion

Before applying any glue, experiment with the placement of your chosen flower and French ephemera label on your book cover. Try different angles and positions until you find a composition that you love. Consider the balance of the elements and how they interact with the kraft paper background. Once you’re happy with their arrangement, use a reliable paper glue stick or any preferred craft glue to firmly adhere them to your covers. Press down gently but firmly to ensure no air bubbles and a smooth finish.

3. Adding Dimension: The Unique 3D Flower Effect

To give your cherry blossom design an extra touch of artistry and a subtle three-dimensional quality, try this clever trick. Select another flower image of the same size as the one you’ve already glued to your cover. This time, carefully cut out a few individual flowers from this duplicate image – I chose three small blossoms. When cutting these individual pieces, aim to remove as much of the surrounding paper as possible to truly highlight their delicate shapes.

To create the 3D effect, gently press the middle of each individually cut paper flower using the end of a paintbrush handle or a stylus, while holding the flower in your hand. This will slightly cup the paper, giving it a lovely, subtle dimension.

Apply a tiny dab of glue only to the very center of each dimensional flower. Then, carefully adhere them precisely on top of their corresponding shapes in the flat design already on your cover. This layering technique will make certain parts of your floral arrangement subtly “pop,” adding depth and visual interest without overwhelming the elegant black and white aesthetic.

4. Customization: Making It Uniquely Yours

You can choose to decorate all your kraft paper covers with the same beautiful cherry blossom and French ephemera designs for a consistent look, or you can mix and match with other elements from the printable, or even entirely different designs. While I opted to keep my covers simple, embracing the classic black-and-white elegance on the kraft paper, the customization opportunities are endless!

Feel free to incorporate your favorite crafting mediums to further personalize the paper. Experiment with distress ink to add an aged, antique patina around the edges of the cover or the printed images. Watercolors or pastels can introduce soft washes of color, while rubber stamps can add intricate patterns or sentiments. You could even use your gel plate to create unique textured backgrounds on the kraft paper *before* or *after* making the covers. Treat each kraft paper cover as a blank canvas, inviting you to express your individual artistic style. Whether you prefer a minimalist design or a richly layered aesthetic, these covers are designed to be truly yours.

Showcasing Your Finished Masterpieces

The final results are truly captivating, aren’t they? It’s remarkable how a simple material like kraft paper, combined with a timeless technique and elegant designs, can transform ordinary books into such visually appealing items. These covers aren’t just functional; they’re gorgeous statements of handmade charm!

As you might notice in my finished example, I decided to add a small cutout branch on the left side of the main flower image. I felt that particular side needed a little extra detail to balance the composition, and it subtly enhances the overall floral arrangement.

This traditional book-covering technique is wonderfully forgiving. While your covers might not turn out “machine perfect,” their handmade quality and slight imperfections are precisely what give them character and warmth. You’ll quickly get accustomed to handling the open books, understanding that the covers are designed to be easily removed or adjusted, as we haven’t used any glue to permanently secure them to the book itself.

Originally, this “old school” method was primarily used to protect valuable book covers from damage, dirt, and wear. However, I love that we’ve been able to elevate its purpose, giving it a significant aesthetic role alongside its foundational functionality. This easy wrapping technique allows you to create a personalized collection of gorgeous kraft paper covers for an endless array of items: beloved books, academic notebooks, cherished journals, detailed planners, or anything else that sparks your imagination, regardless of its size.

Imagine creating stacks of these beautifully adorned books to use as unique decorative accents in your home, adding a touch of vintage charm to any shelf or coffee table. They are also perfect for quickly customizing junk journal covers, instantly giving them a refined yet rustic appeal. And for those last-minute gift emergencies, these handmade book covers are an absolute savior! They are incredibly simple to make, can be ready in no time, and offer a heartfelt, personalized touch for birthdays, holidays, or just because. The sky truly is the limit when it comes to the creative applications for these versatile beauties.
