With December’s gentle arrival, a new journaling adventure beckoned. My creative process always begins with envisioning the overarching aesthetic that will seamlessly guide my work throughout the month. For this particular journal, I was determined to capture the serene beauty and festive spirit of December. I envisioned a robust, hard-covered journal, which I meticulously crafted from an old book. The cover was transformed through a careful painting process, followed by the application of a crackle finish, giving it an authentic, aged appearance that perfectly complements the vintage theme. To evoke a sense of warmth and invitation, I decided to create a charming door on the cover. This was achieved by adhering two precisely cut pieces of rectangular chipboard, similarly painted and treated with the crackle effect, to the front. A delicate vintage button served as the perfect doorknob, adding a touch of rustic elegance. The finishing flourish was a miniature wreath, lovingly fashioned from trimmed mini pine cones and dried berries I had personally gathered during a recent refreshing trip to the forest, bringing a touch of nature’s magic to this winter wonderland journal.
Understanding that this journal would serve its purpose for just one month, I consciously opted for a more intimate size, creating two smaller signatures rather than one bulky volume. My personal preference for creamy neutrals guided my paper selection, setting a warm and inviting tone. I printed every exquisite paper from The Graphics Fairy’s “Vintage Paperie” themed bundle onto high-quality copy paper, utilizing my printer’s double-sided print feature to maximize space and aesthetic appeal. Beyond these, each signature was enriched with a tactile variety of materials, including authentic vintage wrapping paper, delicate napkins, and evocative old book pages, each contributing to the journal’s unique texture and story. To add a subtle yet distinctive touch of contrast and pattern, I also incorporated a rich brown plaid digital paper sourced from the “London Detective” bundle, creating a sophisticated blend of textures and patterns.
The next captivating step involved a deep dive into the treasure trove of themed bundles available on The Graphics Fairy’s Premium Membership site. I meticulously explored, downloaded, and curated a collection of images that perfectly resonated with my vision of December. To further refine my selection, I performed specific searches within the Membership site for iconic winter elements such as owls, poinsettias, holly, majestic evergreen trees, and charming pine cones – these were the motifs I was particularly keen to weave into the fabric of my journal. Once selected, these beautiful vintage images were printed on two distinct types of paper: richly coffee-dyed copy paper, which imparted a wonderfully aged and textured feel, and smooth matte photo paper, perfect for showcasing vibrant details. This thoughtful combination ensured that each image not only looked stunning but also contributed to the overall tactile and visual experience of the journal.
The interior of the journal received as much attention as its exterior. I carefully lined the inside cover with stained cardstock, providing a durable and aesthetically pleasing foundation. To this, I added a delicate strip of vintage lace, its intricate pattern lending an air of timeless elegance. A beautiful handkerchief adorned with festive poinsettias was then strategically placed and secured to form a charming pocket, perfect for tucking away precious ephemera or small mementos. For the inside back cover, I sourced stunning poinsettia images from the “Retro Christmas” bundle, printing them in a variety of sizes to create visual interest. Each poinsettia was then meticulously fussy-cut and its edges delicately touched with gold gilt, adding a subtle shimmer and luxurious feel. These gilded poinsettias were then arranged and glued vertically atop an antique quilt pattern, creating a rich tapestry of texture and design. To complete this serene scene, I nestled some fresh evergreen clippings, gathered from a tree in my own backyard, symbolizing renewal and natural beauty.
While I adore the process of creating a junk journal, I consciously avoid “pre-decorating” the pages too extensively. I’ve found that over-decoration can sometimes stifle spontaneous creativity when it comes to the actual journaling process, limiting the organic flow of thoughts and additions. However, I do strive for a sense of cohesive elegance throughout the journal. To achieve this, I dedicated time to crafting a delightful collection of journaling cards, designed to be integrated during my writing and memory-keeping. I carefully downloaded and cut a variety of captivating images from the “Christmas Scraps,” “Pastel Christmas,” and “Victorian Christmas” themed bundles, ensuring a rich visual tapestry. These images were then mounted onto dyed cardstock, each embellished with delicate vintage lace and snippets of old book pages, adding layers of texture and historical charm. A unique and heartwarming touch was transforming each journaling card into a mini ornament, subtly weaving in the cherished December tradition of hanging ornaments on a Christmas tree. This approach allows for creative freedom while maintaining a beautiful, unified theme throughout the journal.
To enhance the interactive elements of this winter junk journal, I meticulously crafted two exquisite tags, each crowned with a luxurious sari silk topper. These tags were created using versatile coin envelope templates, thoughtfully downloaded from the “Snow Birds” themed bundle, which offered charming avian designs. The delicate texture of the sari silk adds a touch of elegance and tactile appeal, making these tags perfect for adding a pop of color and interest to any page. Further enriching the journal, I designed and stitched a charming little embroidered pocket. This pocket serves as a perfect sanctuary for a curated stack of fussy-cut ephemera, carefully selected from various premium bundles and even some delightful free resources generously offered on The Graphics Fairy site. This ensures that every page holds a delightful surprise, waiting to be discovered and incorporated into future journaling entries.
My deep affection for nature often finds its way into my journal creations, and this winter journal was no exception. I incorporated delicate dried tree and boxwood cuttings onto several pages, infusing them with an organic, rustic charm. One notable application was on a beautifully crafted envelope, which I fashioned using the captivating owl digital paper from the “Birds Watcher’s Bliss” themed bundle. The majestic owls on the paper perfectly complement the natural elements, creating a harmonious blend of artistry and nature. Furthermore, I created a charming little booklet folder, drawing inspiration and elements from the “Dicken’s Christmas” themed bundle. This particular addition held special significance, as I had already planned to re-listen to the timeless classic “A Christmas Carol” during this festive season. I knew this booklet would be the perfect companion for documenting my reflections and experiences as I re-immersed myself in the story, transforming a simple read into a cherished journaling experience. This approach ensures that the journal isn’t just a collection of pretty pages, but a living narrative of personal experiences and inspirations.
