A Glimpse Into Our 2012 Home

A Nostalgic Journey: Revisiting Our 2012 Home Tour

Stepping back in time is often a delightful experience, and today, I’m inviting you on a personal journey through a home that holds a special place in my heart. This particular home tour dates back to 2012, a significant period in our lives. As I’ve been tidying up older blog posts, the thought of deleting this one crossed my mind – after all, we no longer reside in this beloved house. However, a wave of nostalgia washed over me, and I realized the profound joy and inspiration this tour still holds. It’s not just about showcasing decor; it’s a tangible collection of nearly a decade’s worth of memories, laughter, and everyday moments.

While this house is no longer ours, the style, the cherished pieces, and the design choices continue to resonate. I believe that good design, much like good memories, is timeless. Perhaps you’ll find a spark of inspiration for your own living spaces, or maybe, like me, you’ll simply enjoy a walk down memory lane, appreciating the evolution of personal style and the enduring charm of a well-loved home. Join me as we explore the heart of this house, room by room, starting with a bright and welcoming kitchen that truly was the hub of our family life.

Timeless Elegance: Our Inviting White Kitchen

The kitchen, for many, is the undisputed heart of the home, and ours was no exception. When we designed this space, the vision was clear: a bright, airy white kitchen that felt both classic and incredibly functional. The timeless appeal of white cabinetry paired with sleek black countertops created a striking contrast, offering a clean canvas that allowed our personal touches and vintage finds to truly shine, making it an ideal setting for both everyday living and special occasions.

Admittedly, my kitchen island doesn’t typically boast such perfectly arranged produce – unless, of course, you count a bowl of well-loved, slightly bruised bananas! This particular photoshoot was a wonderful collaboration with my dear friends, Amy and Lisa, from the incredibly inspiring Lucketts Store. Their expert eye for styling brought out the very best in the space, transforming it into a picture-perfect setting that still evokes a sense of warmth and hospitality. We aimed to create vignettes that highlighted the kitchen’s potential for both beauty and practicality, capturing its essence in every frame.

The thoughtful inclusion of fresh green elements, from verdant plants to crisp produce, injected vibrant life into the predominantly neutral palette. These subtle pops of color offered a refreshing contrast, making the space feel even more inviting and dynamic. Among the charming details you’ll notice are the vintage “number 4” from an old road sign – a quirky find that adds character and a touch of Americana – and a beautiful champagne bucket, a cherished family heirloom that found its perfect spot on the counter, blending sentimentality with practical elegance. These personal touches were crucial in making the white kitchen feel uniquely ours, rather than just a sterile, modern space.

A Gathering Spot: The Breakfast Nook

Adjacent to the main kitchen area was our beloved breakfast nook, a casual yet charming space centered around an old, chippy painted farm table. This table, another fantastic acquisition from Lucketts, had been with us for years, bearing witness to countless family meals, morning coffees, and homework sessions. Its perfectly imperfect distressed finish told a story, adding a layer of rustic charm to the refined kitchen. The chairs, a more recent find from Target, complemented the farm table beautifully, proving that you don’t always need to spend a fortune to achieve a cohesive and stylish look. This combination of high-end and accessible pieces is a hallmark of truly personal and authentic interior design.

Suspended above this inviting table was a reproduction jeweler’s light from Pottery Barn. Its industrial-inspired design provided a focal point, casting a warm, ambient glow that made the breakfast nook feel incredibly cozy, especially during early mornings or relaxed evenings. This blend of vintage, rustic, and subtle industrial elements truly defined the character of our kitchen, creating an atmosphere that was both stylish and eminently livable. It was a space where design met daily life, seamlessly and beautifully.

My Enduring Love for Antique Ironstone

If you’ve followed my design journey for any length of time, you’ll know about my deep-seated passion for antique Ironstone. These timeless white ceramic pieces hold an unparalleled charm and versatility that makes them indispensable in nearly every room of my house. From pitchers to platters, bowls to tureens, I simply cannot resist adding them to my collection whenever I discover a piece at a good price. Their simple elegance and pristine white color allow them to integrate seamlessly with any decor style, adding a touch of classic sophistication without ever feeling overdone. In the kitchen, they served as both decorative accents and practical serving pieces, embodying my philosophy of functional beauty and adding layers of history to the fresh white backdrop.

Taking a step back, this comprehensive view allows you to appreciate the full scope of the kitchen’s design. It was a space meticulously crafted to be both aesthetically pleasing and incredibly livable, a true testament to the enduring appeal of a well-executed white kitchen with thoughtful, personal touches. The blend of black and white, vintage and modern, created a harmonious environment that was both a joy to cook in and a pleasure to simply be in. It truly was the vibrant heart of our home for many years, filled with countless cherished moments.

Sophisticated Serenity: Our Gray Living Room Sanctuary

Transitioning from the bright, bustling energy of the kitchen, we enter the living room, a space designed for comfort, conversation, and quiet contemplation. Here, I embraced a bold and beautiful color choice, painting the walls a rich, gorgeous charcoal gray. The specific shade, Gauntlet Gray by Sherwin Williams, provided a dramatic yet incredibly sophisticated backdrop, instantly transforming the room’s ambiance. This decision was a significant departure from the previous red walls, requiring a tinted primer and then two diligent coats of paint to achieve this deep, enveloping hue – a project that was well worth the effort for the stunning result.

Thoughtful Repurposing and Eclectic Finds

One of my favorite aspects of decorating is the art of repurposing and integrating pieces from different chapters of life. Many elements in this living room were “pulled” from other spaces, demonstrating how cherished items can find new life and purpose. The striking horse print and the comfortable Ikea Ektorp loveseat, known for its incredible comfort and timeless design, were both relocated from other rooms, proving that good furniture can adapt to new environments. The Ektorp series, with its washable covers, has always been a practical and stylish choice for active family homes, offering both durability and a chic aesthetic that blends seamlessly with various decor styles.

The substantial iron mirrors and robust iron industrial tables were treasured finds from my former shop space at Lucketts Store. These pieces brought an element of raw, industrial elegance to the room, contrasting beautifully with the softness of the fabrics and the depth of the gray walls. The same applied to the coffee table and additional chairs, each piece carefully chosen for its character and ability to contribute to the room’s layered aesthetic. Grounding the entire space was a natural Sisal Rug from Ikea, adding a touch of organic texture and defining the seating area with subtle sophistication. This rug not only anchored the furniture arrangement but also introduced an element of natural warmth to the cool gray palette.

The Allure of Ironstone and Soft Drapery

My passion for collecting antique Ironstone pieces extends far beyond the kitchen. In the living room, these pristine white ceramics find new purpose, offering subtle elegance and a sense of history against the dramatic gray backdrop. Their clean lines and understated beauty ensure they complement any decor, truly making them a versatile decorator’s dream. Whether used as standalone decorative objects, to hold fresh flowers, or simply to add a touch of timeless charm, Ironstone effortlessly elevates the space, acting as delicate counterpoints to the more robust industrial elements.

To soften the bold wall color and introduce a sense of airiness, I opted for long, flowing White Curtains, also from Ikea. These curtains, while sometimes challenging to photograph due to their bright nature, were absolutely perfect for the space. They allowed natural light to filter in beautifully, adding a gentle contrast and preventing the charcoal gray from feeling too heavy. Their simple design reinforced the clean aesthetic while providing privacy and a touch of serene elegance, contributing to the overall sense of calm and sophistication in the room. The sheer fabric provided a soft glow, making the room feel both intimate and expansive.

Harmonious Transitions: Living to Dining

From the living room, you catch a glimpse of the dining room, revealing a thoughtful interplay of colors and spaces. The staircase, centrally positioned, acts as a natural divider and architectural feature between the two rooms, guiding the eye and creating a sense of flow. I particularly loved how the deep charcoal walls of the living room harmonized with the warm chocolate brown walls of the adjacent dining room. This unexpected pairing created a sophisticated and inviting flow, each color enhancing the other without competing. The transition was further softened by a light taupe paint color in the foyer, acting as a gentle bridge between these two distinct but complementary palettes. This careful consideration of color progression ensured that each room felt unique yet interconnected, contributing to the overall cohesive design of our cherished home, fostering a sense of continuous discovery as one moved through the space.

Reflecting on this home tour brings a smile to my face, not just for the beautiful spaces, but for the life lived within them. It serves as a wonderful reminder that our homes are truly extensions of ourselves – evolving, adapting, and collecting stories over time. I hope this journey through our former home has offered you a blend of inspiration, practical tips, and a glimpse into a decorating style that champions cherished pieces and personal expression. May it encourage you to infuse your own living spaces with items that tell your unique story.
