The Inspiration Behind the Skies: A Traveler’s Notebook Journey

Hello, everyone! I’m Lynne from Mockingbird & Main, and I’m delighted to share my August junk journal design team project with you. This month, I ventured into creating another traveler’s notebook style junk journal, a format I find incredibly versatile and personal. The moment I laid eyes on The Graphics Fairy’s “Aeronautical Adventures” bundle, I was utterly captivated. It was a clear sign that this was the theme for my next creative endeavor.

Lately, I’ve found myself yearning for adventure, a craving that naturally led me to the thrilling concept of hot air balloon travel. Incorporating Steampunk elements felt like a natural extension, adding a layer of whimsical inventiveness and Victorian-era charm to the design. While I confess a personal apprehension towards heights, creating this journal allowed me to experience the thrill of flight vicariously. It’s truly the next best thing to soaring amongst the clouds!

A Journey with Lady Wilhelmina: A Tale of Victorian Ambition

To infuse this journal with a compelling narrative, I envisioned a fascinating character: Lady Wilhelmina Wallingford. She is a Victorian woman of considerable wealth and astute business acumen, always on the lookout for promising investment opportunities. Her latest interest? The burgeoning hot air balloon travel and tourism industry. This journal, therefore, became her constant companion, chronicling her journey from her elegant home in London to the vibrant, innovative city of Paris.

In Paris, Lady Wallingford immersed herself in a whirlwind of business meetings, engaging with various pioneering hot air balloon companies and visionary inventors. Her decision on where to invest her substantial funds is not to be taken lightly, yet Lady Wallingford is undeniably a risk-taker, drawn to the excitement of new frontiers. This journal is a testament to her adventurous spirit, serving as a meticulously kept record of her aerial explorations and entrepreneurial pursuits. Within its pages, you’ll discover the fascinating ephemera and intriguing images Lady W collected along her grand European adventure.

Crafting the Pages: A Deep Dive into Design Elements

I knew Lady W would possess a refined, rich taste, and the striking red and gold balloon book cover from the “Aeronautical Adventure” bundle perfectly encapsulated the opulent feel I wanted for this journal. To enhance its luxurious texture and visual interest, I incorporated several sari silk ribbon ruffles. These delicate, vibrant ruffles have become a personal favorite of mine; they are remarkably easy to add to any journal page and instantly elevate the tactile experience, creating an incredible depth and charm.

As I delved deeper into Lady Wilhelmina’s story, I found her intriguing portrait within the “Instant Ancestors” bundle. She shares a page with an old friend from “The Inventor’s Guild” – Charlotte, whose beautiful image is from the “Antique Portraits” bundle. Lady W’s journey wasn’t solely about business, however. Being in Paris, a city renowned for its fashion and culinary delights, meant a visit to the boutiques and wine shops was absolutely essential! The elegant French fashion plate image, which I printed onto delicate parchment paper to create a unique page, is a wonderful free resource from The Graphics Fairy blog itself.

A beautifully curated wine list, neatly tucked into a charming pocket, hails from the exquisite “French Paperie Collection” bundle. This tiny detail adds immense character and reinforces Lady Wilhelmina’s appreciation for the finer things in life, capturing the essence of Parisian elegance within the journal’s pages.

I truly delight in creating clever tuck spots using printable bookmarks. The bookmarks found across several of our bundles are like miniature pieces of art, perfectly sized and shaped for these functional yet decorative elements. For the inside front cover, I utilized a charming bookmark featuring a hot air balloon, sourced from the “Ephemera Collection” bundle, transforming it into an ideal place for storing small notes or keepsakes. Additionally, the vibrant balloon title page from the “Aeronautical Adventure” bundle, printed onto sturdy cardstock, was repurposed to create a generously sized pocket, perfect for larger ephemera.

A true highlight for me was discovering a magnificent aerial photograph of the Eiffel Tower within the “Vintage Paris” bundle. To give it an ethereal quality, I printed this image onto vellum, allowing it to create a semi-transparent, dreamlike page that hints at the wonders of flight and the beauty of the Parisian cityscape.

Further enhancing the journey, I crafted another page featuring a delightful flip-out element, utilizing the incredibly detailed aerial city view image also found within the “Aeronautical Adventure” bundle. The intricate details of this image truly transport the viewer above the bustling streets, offering a unique perspective of urban life from a hot air balloon.

For the very heart of the journal, I desired something bold and impactful. The papers from the “Marbled Endpapers” bundle are always a fantastic choice, and the rich red marbled paper particularly stood out. Its dramatic swirls and vibrant color felt perfectly suited to the adventurous, slightly rebellious spirit of Lady Wilhelmina and the overall Steampunk aesthetic of this journal.

Beyond the Journal: Extra Treasures and Creative Expansions

To accompany Lady Wallingford’s exquisite journal, I couldn’t resist creating a few extra goodies. Among these is a charming salesman’s sampler of hot air balloons. This unique tag-style mini-journal was created by printing the captivating black & white balloon images from the “Steampunk Images #2 Bundle” onto an acetate sheet. These versatile tags aren’t just for display; they can be used for additional journaling, as decorative embellishments, or even as extra tuck spots throughout the main journal, offering endless possibilities for interaction and personalization.

I truly hope this detailed tour of my August Design Team Project has sparked your own creative flames.
