Greetings, everyone! It brings me immense joy to reconnect with you and unveil my December Design Team junk journal project. I hope you’re all thriving and finding moments for creativity amidst life’s hustle and bustle. This particular piece, which I’ve affectionately named Adelaide’s Journal of Letters, takes the form of a charming traveler’s notebook – a perfect canvas for holding treasured memories and stories.

The genesis of this entire project was a truly serendipitous discovery. A while back, I stumbled upon a treasure trove on eBay: a vintage box overflowing with handwritten letters, antique greeting cards, and a delightful assortment of historical ephemera, all belonging to a woman named Adelaide. As a passionate junk journal artist, there’s little that excites me more than the prospect of tucking authentic, handwritten letters into a journal. Each letter is a tiny window into a past life, a whispered secret from another era. Reading through them, you feel an intimate connection to someone else’s story, experiencing a fleeting moment of their joys, sorrows, and daily routines. What particularly struck me as I sifted through Adelaide’s collection was the consistent black and white, or rather, black and cream, color scheme prevalent among most of the assorted ephemera pieces – wedding invitations, graduation programs, performance tickets, and more. This monochromatic palette hinted at a timeless elegance and became the foundational aesthetic for my journal.

This exquisite color scheme immediately brought to mind The Graphics Fairy’s stunning Black & Cream Ephemera Bundle, which I had admired on the Premium Membership site. The moment I revisited this bundle, I knew it was the perfect complement to Adelaide’s treasures. The bundle provided an extensive array of digital images that perfectly echoed the vintage, sophisticated feel of the found ephemera, allowing me to expand upon the black and cream theme throughout the journal. It was a match made in creative heaven, transforming a simple collection of old papers into a cohesive and deeply personal narrative.

Another significant wellspring of inspiration for this journal came from the remarkable work of Sheena from Luna Rozu. If you’re not yet familiar with her distinctive and enchanting journals, I highly recommend exploring her past projects. Many of them have been featured right here on The Graphics Fairy blog during her time as a valued design team member. Her unique approach to layering, her masterful incorporation of textures, and her ingenious methods for organizing ephemera profoundly influenced my vision for Adelaide’s journal, especially in how I handled the volume of original letters.

To accommodate the abundance of Adelaide’s original letters, which quickly threatened to “overstuff” the journal in the most delightful way, I incorporated a small yet beautiful collection of embellished envelopes. This clever solution, also inspired by Sheena’s innovative techniques, provided an elegant and practical way to include more of Adelaide’s precious correspondence without compromising the journal’s integrity or flow. These envelopes act as charming little repositories, inviting the viewer to discover more hidden stories within stories, adding another layer of interactive discovery to the journal.

Beyond the paper elements, I consciously integrated a variety of assorted textiles throughout the journal, all carefully selected to adhere to the sophisticated black and cream color scheme. These fabric inclusions — delicate lace trims, vintage ribbons, and small scraps of patterned cloth — add invaluable texture, depth, and a tactile quality that elevates the sensory experience of flipping through the pages. The soft touch of fabric against the crispness of paper creates a delightful contrast, enhancing the overall vintage aesthetic and inviting further exploration.

The Black & Cream Ephemera Bundle from The Graphics Fairy Premium Membership is an absolute treasure trove, brimming with an incredible array of additional printables meticulously created by the talented Graphics Fairy team. Among these, I found myself particularly drawn to the versatile journal cards. I utilized quite a few of these stunning cards, transforming them into various elements within Adelaide’s journal – from dedicated journaling ephemera spots for personal reflections to clever tuck spots designed to hold more of Adelaide’s original documents or new keepsakes. Their elegant designs seamlessly integrated with the journal’s theme, providing both aesthetic beauty and functional utility.

One of my favorite creative adaptations involved the washi tape sheets from the bundle. Instead of cutting them into traditional tape strips, I chose a different path to maximize their visual impact. I printed these beautiful designs onto premium copy paper, ensuring a crisp and vibrant rendition. For added character and to make them feel like integral parts of the journal, I then printed a subtle, light grungy paper pattern on their reverse sides. This technique allowed me to use them as full-fledged journal pages, creating unique patterned spreads that added visual interest and a cohesive aesthetic throughout the book.

The covers of Adelaide’s Journal of Letters are a testament to the versatility of the Graphics Fairy bundles. Both the front and back covers were crafted using a combination of the exquisite patterned and marbled papers found within the Black & Cream Ephemera Bundle. To give them a substantial and luxurious feel, I printed these digital papers onto matte presentation paper, which offers a beautiful finish and a satisfying weight. Once printed, I meticulously glued them back to back, creating a sturdy and visually appealing cover. The final touch, a delicate line of sewing around the edges, not only secured the layers but also added a charming, handcrafted detail that truly brought the covers to life.

Among the many treasures in the bundle, there is a particularly stunning image of a strip of vintage lace. Recognizing its potential, I enlarged this beautiful digital image and strategically incorporated it into the journal as a long side tuck spot. This not only added an elegant visual element but also created a functional space to securely hold additional notes, small photographs, or more of Adelaide’s cherished ephemera. It’s these thoughtful details that give a junk journal its character and utility.

I frequently emphasize this point, but it bears repeating: the exceptional quality of the digital images available on The Graphics Fairy Premium site is truly unparalleled. This superior resolution allows for images to be printed at a multitude of different sizes – whether enlarged for a statement piece or scaled down for a subtle accent – all while preserving their intricate detail and remarkable clarity. This fidelity is a game-changer for mixed-media artists. Taking advantage of this, I used another decorative trim-type image from the bundle, printing it onto sturdy cardstock to craft a stylish belly band. This not only holds various elements together but also adds another layer of visual interest and structure to the journal.

For the backs of the journaling cards, I envisioned something beyond plain paper – a subtle, slightly grungy texture that would still be perfectly writable. My solution came from the Rich Marbled Endpapers bundle. I carefully cropped specific images from this bundle, isolating the elegant ivory marbled papers. These sections were then enlarged to print beautifully onto the back of the 8 1/2” x 11” sheets containing my journaling cards. This thoughtful detail provided a cohesive and aesthetically pleasing surface, inviting further personalization and written reflections without being distracting.
