Kelly herself is eager to share the story and creative process behind her magnificent journal. Let’s delve into her world as she describes the intricate details that make this travel diary truly special.
The Vintage Heart: A Schoolbook Transformed into a Travel Diary
My second journal project for The Graphics Fairy is a bespoke travel diary junk journal, thoughtfully bound into the cover of a vintage schoolbook. This particular volume, Elementary Studies in Geography, immediately sparked my imagination with its worn yet elegant appearance. The cover boasts exquisite, deeply embossed details that speak volumes of its history and the hands it has passed through. Its age is also beautifully marked by its original cost, proudly displayed in old money: 2/~, or two shillings—a charming detail that instantly transports you back in time. This robust and character-filled cover provides the perfect foundation, a nostalgic gateway for documenting adventures, real or imagined.
Crafting the Core: Interior Pages Designed for Exploration
Opening the journal reveals a carefully curated collection of 50 hand-torn, tea-stained pages. These pages are crafted from 160 gsm Canson mixed media paper, a choice that ensures exceptional durability and versatility. The substantial weight of the paper means it possesses plenty of stability, making it ideal for a wide array of artistic applications, from painting and drawing to gluing various added elements without any bleed-through or buckling. The tea-staining process imparts a beautiful, aged patina, giving each page an authentic vintage feel that perfectly complements the journal’s theme. The torn edges add to the rustic, handcrafted aesthetic, inviting you to fill them with travel memories, sketches, and thoughtful reflections. Beyond the blank canvas, you’ll discover an abundance of embellishments and creative accents, all thoughtfully related to the spirit of travel and discovery, waiting to inspire your own journaling journey.
An Abundance of Pockets: Functional Art in Your Junk Journal
One of the most exciting and functional aspects of any junk journal, especially a travel diary, is the clever incorporation of pockets. These hidden treasures provide ample space for storing mementos, journaling cards, tickets, photos, and other ephemera collected during your adventures. Kelly’s journal is brimming with such ingenious designs, each serving both a practical purpose and adding a layer of thematic depth to the overall composition.
Symbolic Beginnings: Owl Pockets and Postcard Printables
For me, birds and their effortless flight beautifully symbolize the original and ultimate mode of making a journey—the freedom of movement and exploration. It’s fitting, therefore, that the very first page of this travel diary features a striking side pocket adorned with a variety of majestic owls. These stunning owl images were created using Printables available at The Graphics Fairy’s exclusive Premium Member site. I printed them onto tracing paper, a technique that, when glued, creates a wonderfully transparent, ethereal effect, adding a captivating sense of depth and mystery to the page. Tucked inside this enchanting owl pocket is the first of many versatile Postcard/Notecard Printables, also sourced from our Premium Member Site, ready for your thoughts and travel notes.
Nostalgic Organization: Corner Pockets and Library Cards
Further into the journal, you’ll discover a charming corner pocket, complete with its own delightful “library card” pocket. These elements evoke a sense of nostalgic organization, reminiscent of classic library archives. Both pockets were crafted using the versatile Pockets and Envelopes Templates available at the Premium Member Site. The library card is perfect for jotting down key dates, destinations, or simply as a decorative element to pull out and admire. This design not only adds visual interest but also provides a clever, easily accessible spot for smaller keepsakes or reminders, making it an indispensable feature for any travel journal.
Hidden Wonders: Mini-Accordion Book and Steampunk Accents
In yet another cleverly designed corner pocket, I’ve tucked away a miniature accordion book, a delightful surprise for any explorer of this journal. This mini-book was created using captivating imagery from the Steampunk Images kit, adding a touch of industrial elegance and intricate fantasy. Throughout the various signatures of the journal, I’ve integrated tea bags, not just for their texture but also for their subtle scent and the rustic charm they bring. Here, a tea bag is beautifully combined with a delicate butterfly, also printed on tracing paper, enhancing the ethereal quality and making it feel like a secret treasure discovered on a grand adventure.
A Nod to Correspondence: Vintage Letter Sleeve
Embracing the rich history of travel correspondence, I transformed an original letter from the 1950s into a unique sleeve. This thoughtful detail not only preserves a piece of history but also serves a functional purpose, holding more steampunk-themed and tea-dyed notecards. These cards are perfect for journaling, allowing you to capture fleeting thoughts or detailed accounts of your travels. This vintage letter sleeve is a direct nod to the art of sending and receiving letters during journeys, adding a deeply personal and nostalgic layer to the Travel Diary Junk Journal, inviting you to imagine the stories these original letters might have held.
The Element of Surprise: Secret Pop-Up Map Pocket
Adding an exciting element of surprise and interactivity, a secret pop-up pocket is ingeniously hidden within the pages. This unique feature is crafted from a vintage map, bringing a wonderful geographical texture and historical context to the journal. The pop-up mechanism itself utilizes a fascinating Turkish map fold technique, allowing the map to spring open with a delightful reveal. It’s a perfect spot for concealing secret notes, tiny photographs, or snippets of inspiration, making each discovery within the journal an adventure in itself. The intricate fold adds a tactile dimension, encouraging exploration and interaction with the journal’s various layers.
Exploring the Cosmos: Celestial Maps and Tiny Tea Bag Books
A striking double side pocket is thoughtfully filled with mesmerizing celestial maps, drawn from The Graphics Fairy’s captivating Celestial Images kit. These intricate maps invite a sense of wonder and cosmic journey, expanding the concept of travel beyond earthly bounds. Tucked alongside these starry charts is a tiny, removable book, a true marvel with its pages uniquely fashioned from delicate tea bags. This miniature book offers a charming, unexpected space for miniature drawings, secret thoughts, or even pressed flowers, adding another layer of intimacy and creative possibility to your travel narrative. The combination of celestial themes and rustic tea-bag pages creates a harmonious blend of the grand and the humble.
Vintage Map Pocket: Shabby Chic Butterflies and Travel Reminders
On the opposite side, another beautiful pocket has been meticulously crafted from a genuine vintage map, dating back to approximately 1900. This historical artifact forms the perfect backdrop for a collection of more notecards, each ready to capture thoughts and memories. Among these, you’ll find a particularly charming notecard featuring a shabby chic butterfly, created following the Post Card Butterflies Tutorial available on the Premium Members Site. This combination of an antique map and delicate butterfly imagery encapsulates a sense of whimsical travel and historical exploration, providing both a functional storage space and a visually engaging page for your travel diary.
