PicMonkey Tutorial: Crafting Your Custom Tea Party Invitation
Now, let’s delve into the exciting process of designing this bespoke tea party invitation using PicMonkey. PicMonkey is an incredibly versatile and user-friendly online photo editor and design tool that makes creating beautiful graphics accessible to everyone, regardless of their design experience. We’ll break down the design into two main stages: first creating the central graphic, and then assembling the full invitation.
Gathering Your Design Resources
Before you begin, it’s helpful to have all your creative assets in one place. For this elegant vintage tea party invitation, we used the following elements, all available through The Graphics Fairy or reputable font sites:
- Vintage Woman Image: This captivating Marie Antoinette-style woman with her grand hat is the central focal point, adding a touch of historical whimsy.
- Delicate Teacup Graphic: A charming vintage teacup with roses completes the tea party theme, subtly placed to enhance the overall composition.
- Background Paper: We chose a lovely pink background paper from The Graphics Fairy Membership site to provide a soft, inviting base. If you’re not a member, an exquisite alternative like this antique end paper works wonderfully too, offering a similar aged charm.
- Fonts: The chosen fonts significantly contribute to the vintage aesthetic. We used CAC Champagne for its elegant script and Dalle for a classic, readable look. For these exact fonts to appear in PicMonkey, you’ll need to download and install them on your computer before opening the PicMonkey editor. This allows PicMonkey to access your system fonts.
Step-by-Step PicMonkey Invitation Design
1. Create the Central Graphic Canvas
Our journey begins by setting up the inner core of your invitation. This central graphic will house the main imagery and event details.
Navigate to PicMonkey and select “Design.” From there, choose “Custom” to set your precise dimensions. For this specific design, enter 1875 pixels wide x 1275 pixels high. These dimensions correspond to approximately 6.25 inches x 4.25 inches, providing ample space for your design elements while ensuring crisp resolution.
2. Add a Decorative Frame
A subtle frame can beautifully define the boundaries of your central graphic and add a touch of sophistication.
On the left-hand toolbar in PicMonkey, click on the “Frames” icon. Select “Simple Edge” for a clean, elegant border. Adjust the “Thickness” – we found 15 to be ideal for this design, offering a noticeable yet delicate line. Next, click on the “Outer color” swatch to choose your frame’s hue. For our vintage aesthetic, we used the hex color value a19f61, a soft, muted green that complements the overall palette. Once satisfied, click “Apply” to set your frame.
3. Incorporate Your Main Image
Now it’s time to bring in the star of the show – the elegant Marie Antoinette-style woman.
Click on the “Overlays” icon (represented by a butterfly on the toolbar). Choose “Your Own” to upload the vintage woman image you’ve gathered. Once uploaded, click and drag the corners of the image to resize it, positioning it thoughtfully on the left side of your framed canvas. If the image happens to have a white background that obscures parts of your newly added frame, simply select the image and change its blend mode to “Multiply.” This handy feature makes white areas transparent, allowing the background frame to show through beautifully.
4. Add Your Event Text
Text is crucial for any invitation, conveying all the essential details with style.
Select the “Text Tool” (represented by a ‘Tt’ icon) from the left toolbar, then click “Add Text.” You have the flexibility to choose from PicMonkey’s extensive font library or use your own installed system fonts. For our design, we opted for the elegant CAC Champagne and the classic Dalle. To personalize the text color, either select a hue from the color box or input a specific hex value. We used a lovely pink (c12927), a sophisticated blue (136989), and a harmonious green (a19f61) to match our vintage theme. Experiment with text sizes: 185 for the main blue header, 115 for prominent pink words, 100 for the main information section, and 40 for smaller details or bullet points, ensuring clear hierarchy and readability. The header was positioned to complement the lady on the left, creating a balanced composition.
5. Save Your Central Graphic
Once you’re completely satisfied with the design of your central graphic, it’s vital to save your work.
Locate and click the “Save” button prominently displayed at the top of the PicMonkey interface. Choose your desired file format (JPEG for smaller file sizes, PNG for higher quality with transparency if applicable) and resolution. Give it a descriptive name so you can easily find it for the next stage of our project.
6. Prepare the Full 5″x7″ Invitation Canvas
With your central graphic saved, we now move on to creating the full 5″x7″ invitation template where this graphic will be placed.
Go back to PicMonkey’s main page and click on “Design.” This time, select the standard “5×7” dimension. By default, PicMonkey often sets this as a vertical canvas. Since our design is horizontal, we need to rotate it. Navigate to the “Basic Edits” menu (the box icon). Choose “Rotate” and click the arrow that moves to the right to orient your canvas horizontally. Don’t forget to click “Apply” to confirm the rotation.
7. Add Your Chosen Background Paper
A beautiful background paper provides the perfect foundation for your invitation, adding texture and visual interest.
Click on the “Overlays” icon (butterfly) and then “Your Own” to upload your chosen background paper or pattern – for instance, the pink background paper we selected. Drag the sides of the uploaded image to resize and reposition it so that it perfectly covers the entire 5″x7″ canvas. Pro Tip: If you find a pattern you love but it’s not in the ideal color, PicMonkey often allows you to click on the color rainbow swatch when the overlay is selected. This feature can help you recolor the background paper to better match your desired palette, offering incredible flexibility in design.
8. Place Your Crafted Center Image
Now, bring in the intricate central graphic you designed earlier.
Go back to the “Overlays” icon (butterfly) and select “Your Own” once more. Upload the central image with the woman and text that you meticulously created and saved in step 5. Once it appears on your canvas, carefully drag its corners to resize it and position it precisely in the center of your 5″x7″ invitation. Ensure it sits symmetrically and harmoniously within the larger background, creating a focal point that draws the eye.
9. Add the Charming Teacup Image
A final touch to reinforce the tea party theme is the delicate teacup graphic.
Click the “Overlays” icon (butterfly) and choose “Your Own.” Upload the vintage teacup image. Resize it to an appropriate scale and then gently reposition it to the lower right-hand corner of your invitation. This placement adds a balanced visual element without distracting from the main text and imagery, enhancing the overall charm and thematic consistency of your DIY invitation.
10. Final Save of Your Custom Tea Party Invitation
You’ve done it! Your beautiful, custom tea party invitation is now complete.
Take one last look to ensure all elements are perfectly aligned and you’re delighted with the final design. When you are fully satisfied, click the “Save” button at the top of the PicMonkey interface. Choose a high-quality format like PNG for printing, or JPEG for sharing digitally. Give your masterpiece a clear, memorable name so you can easily access it for printing or sending to your guests.
Beyond the Tutorial: Tips for Your Tea Party
Now that you have your gorgeous custom tea party invites ready, here are a few extra tips to make your event even more special:
- Theme Consistency: Carry the vintage or Marie Antoinette theme through your decorations, table settings, and even your menu choices. Think delicate porcelain, pastel colors, and elegant floral arrangements.
- Menu Ideas: Classic tea party fare includes finger sandwiches (cucumber, egg salad), scones with clotted cream and jam, mini pastries, macarons, and an assortment of teas.
- Entertainment: Background classical music, a simple floral arranging activity, or even a hat-decorating station can add a fun, interactive element for guests.
- Personalization: Don’t be afraid to experiment with different vintage graphics, background textures, and font combinations in PicMonkey to create invitations for other occasions like baby showers, bridal brunches, or even sophisticated birthday parties.
