Essential Drawing Supplies for Your Bird Art
Before you begin, ensure you have a few basic drawing supplies on hand. You don’t need expensive equipment to create beautiful bird drawings. A simple set will do:
- Pencils: A basic graphite pencil (HB or 2B is great for sketching) is perfect. You might also consider a harder pencil (2H) for light construction lines and a softer one (4B or 6B) for darker details and shading.
- Eraser: A good quality eraser is essential for correcting mistakes and cleaning up your lines.
- Paper: Standard printer paper works well for practice. For finished pieces, consider a slightly thicker drawing paper.
- Optional Coloring Tools: Once your line art is complete, you might want to add color. Crayons, colored pencils, markers, or even watercolor paints can bring your birds to life.
How to Draw Flying Birds: A Detailed Step-by-Step Guide
Drawing a bird in flight captures a sense of freedom and movement. This step-by-step tutorial will break down the process of drawing a beautiful flying bird into manageable stages, making it easy for anyone to follow along. We’ll start with basic shapes and gradually add details to create a dynamic and appealing illustration. Remember to draw lightly in the initial steps, as these lines will serve as your guide and can be easily erased later.
Bird Drawing Step 1: The Foundation – Head and Eye
Begin your flying bird drawing by creating a gentle, sweeping curve. This line will form the top contour of your bird’s head and back. At one end of this curve, draw a tight spiral. This spiral will serve as the primary guide for the bird’s head. Imagine the swirl as the beginning of the bird’s face. Once you have your spiral in place, add a small, distinct dot at the end of it to mark the bird’s eye. This initial step establishes the direction and basic form of your bird, so take your time to get the curve and spiral just right.
Step 2: Defining the Tail Base
In this step, we’ll start to give our bird a sense of structure by outlining its tail. From the very end of the initial curved line (opposite the head), draw a new line that extends downwards and then curves slightly upwards, meeting the top edge of the spiral you created in Step 1. This connecting line provides the foundational shape for the bird’s tail, giving it a solid base from which to grow. Ensure this line flows naturally from the back of the bird’s body.
Step 3: Initiating the Wings
Now it’s time to begin sketching the bird’s most defining feature for flight: its wings. Directly below the head, draw a new curved line. This line will serve as the initial outline for the top edge of the bird’s first wing. Think about the natural arc a bird’s wing makes when outstretched in flight. This curve should suggest motion and grace. This single line is enough for now to establish the starting point for the wings.
Step 4: Shaping the Tail and Beak
With the basic body and wing starting point in place, let’s refine the tail and add the beak. Return to the tail section. Connect the two lines on the left side of your drawing to form a distinct triangle shape. This triangle gives a clear, structured outline to the bird’s tail feathers. Next, move to the bird’s head and add a tiny, sharp triangle for the beak. The size and angle of this triangle will define the bird’s expression, so place it carefully.
Step 5: Refining Your Bird’s Form
This step brings more character and detail to your bird. First, widen the base of the tail section by adding a slightly curved line on either side, making it appear fuller and more natural. Next, gently enlarge the bird’s eye a little bit, giving it more presence. At the base of the beak, draw a small V-shaped line; this adds definition and implies the opening of the beak. Finally, draw in more pronounced wings, giving them fuller shapes and suggesting the primary flight feathers. At this stage, you have a charming, simple cartoon bird drawing. If you prefer a minimalist style, you could certainly stop here. However, if you’re keen to add more realism and texture, continue to the next step.
Step 6: Adding Feather Details for Realism
For those who wish to add depth and texture, Step 6 focuses on detailing. Sketch in additional lines and curves on the wings and tail, as shown in the drawing above, to create the convincing effect of individual feathers. Pay attention to the direction and overlap of the feathers to enhance the sense of movement and natural form. You can also add subtle lines on the bird’s body to suggest feather patterns or contours. These details will elevate your flying bird drawing from a basic outline to a more polished piece of art.
Bringing Your Flying Bird to Life with Color
The final and perhaps most exciting step is to add color to your beautiful bird drawing! This is where your creativity truly shines. Gather your preferred coloring tools—whether they are vibrant markers, classic Crayola crayons, smooth oil pastels, or precise colored pencils. Experiment with different shades and hues to bring out the personality of your bird. For inspiration, I chose blue and a soft peachy tone, imagining my bird as a graceful Bluebird. However, the choice is entirely yours! Let your imagination soar, explore various color palettes, and create a unique masterpiece. There are no wrong answers when it comes to expressing yourself through color.
